Is it normal for the diesel to sound like a rattle can on acceleration ? it's not heavy acceleration but medium acceleration I guess. I would say it's starts right around like 30 kind of comes and goes I guess. It's kind of hard to describe but I wasn't sure if that was normal
Yes. No where near as quiet as a gasser. Although with the exhaust you don’t hear the turbo whining.
Guessing this is your first diesel. What do you have?
Sounds are certainly difficult to explain in text. While not as loud as a metal ball in a can, If low RPM and light load, there is a unique sound to this engine sometimes. Sometimes mine will start off normal and then begin the noise at low speed, low acceleration. Related to fuel injection and combustion has always been my assumption. Whatever I'm hearing is normal and I have zero concern about it, has made the noise at random for 11 years. The best way I can explain, the sound is similar to the engine noise as soon as the PCM commands active regeneration (extra fuel).
Yes sir, this is definitely my first diesel and trying to learn it all. Inside a little overwhelming compared to a gasser but that's really my only concern at this point was that sound. My wife says I'm deaf but when it comes to my vehicles I can hear it all and she can't hear anything regarding vehicles. This is also my first used vehicle and many many years as well so definitely a little paranoid but I did get an extended warranty so it takes a little bit of a concern away
It's super quiet at idle but the rattle happens only on low acceleration which is what I wasn't sure about. It seems like it starts in 3rd gear on up. Is that what you all were referring to?
Every new thing you find out about your diesel will bring a smile to your face. You should post some pics and let us know what you have. Ask for suggestions about accessories and watch the flood gates open.

Appreciate that! You guys have been great! This is a whole new world for me with so many unknowns so little freaked out especially with 80k on the odometer but Carfax shows really good care. Truck is in great shape so hoping to keep it that way.
Noises freak me out so I'm still unsure of that freaking noise. It'll grow on me for sure.
A low cetane number of your fuel will cause more rattle. Try a different fuel station and add a cetane booster before accepting that the noise you hear is normal.

Congrats on the new truck. You'll come to love that sound, believe me.
How much cetane do you guys use? I bought the Ford cetane booster and the first tank I used 4 oz. I think I've read five in the winter and four in the summer but wanted to see what you guys thought. Thank you all!
I use K100D which amongst other things, has a 1.5 to 2 cetane improver in it. I always buy fuel from a local carwash chain here that tests the fuel twice a day, adds an additive to it I guess, and I get a 12 cent discount for having their wash club card linked to my checking.
Some guys here have said that they noticed their trucks are louder than before with less miles. Mine has almost 74k on her now, and she seems to be louder IMO than when I first bought her new. Yours with 80k probably sounds the same.
While I'm at it I guess I should put some pictures of underneath. I just got underneath the truck found some wet spots. You feel a little oily so I'm wondering if I've got some leaks somewhere. Is it normal to see you a little bit? I know that they were underneath changing the upper oil pan so I don't know if I got a little messy or what but I guess it's something I'll definitely keep an eye on
Edit: it's been a little wet around lately though so might just be from puddles. Definitely something I'll watch
