Been browsing the interwebs about this modificiation. I know what it does and how it works, but i am looking for actual pictures as to how to go about the wiring. How do i route the wiring, what wires and where do i "cut" into these wires.
Looking at doing the DPDT version of the mod that will allow me to turn the converter on,off, and auto (when someone else drives the truck). If anyone has some pictures to accompany this post and make this a bit easier for me to understand instead of trying to decypher electrical scematics (i get confused by them) it would be super appreciated!
I dont have any pictures, but a question. Do you do a lot of towing? From what i can find it help greatly with that, but not a whole lot more.
well i got a boat and a cabin that is about 160 miles from me that i go to often during the summer and fall so i'd say i tow a good amount, its not a heavy boat but its about a 3 hr drive one way.
I can't understand what that mod helps, can anyone explain it to me? Don't worry about getting too technical, I can follow it.
My understanding is that this mod was more inteneded for the 4R100 trannys, which did not lock up the TC until OD was engaged (45 mph) so basically any speeds under 45 the tranny was always "slipping" and generating heat, especially when towing. Luckily our E4OD does lock the TC in 3rd gear, but one could argue it locks up to quickly. This mod will give the owner complete control of the TCC and help lower trans temps especially with in town driving and slow speed traffic you may encounter. Also in my own experience 2nd gear in the E4OD is a dog of a gear, and when towing there is an extreme amount of heat generated in 2nd gear vs 3rd with the TC locked. So this mod will allow me to lock the TC up in 2nd as long as i am above ~30 MPH which should help keep transmission temps low when on long pulls up any incline from a stop, and also help keep temps low if i step on it to accelerate in a passing zone. I could imagine seeing a slight increase in acceleration in 2nd gear as well since the transmission wont be "slipping" and building heat. Actually this is true since when WOT is seen by the PCM our trucks actually will lock the TCC in 2nd gear but only at WOT!
Please correct any misinformation I may have put out if soneone has a different take on this.
I understand how to modify the wiring to do this, it's not hard. What I don't understand is WHY I would want to do this.
From what i could gather, it stops some of the lock unlock lock of the converter that some people experience when towing at freeway speed.
Whether or not that happens because of too much added throttle input to maintain speed or deceleration and getting back on the throttle i dont know. I dont have enough experience with the e4od to know how they act. Ive done it on older electronic lockup 700R4s after an overdrive swap from a 3 speed in a carb application. But thats because there is no cheap way to control it other than a NO pressure switch that closes when the 4th gear circuit gets pressure.
