Colorado has ethanol in its gas. I would look for gas stations that sell pure gas if you still run a mechanical fuel pump. This will help with vapor lock problems. Since I started running pure gas in my 74 a few years back it hasn't vapor locked since. Use to on the warmer/hot days frequently. Maverick is one station that sells pure gas in Colorado.
Are you going to take I-70 or take the back roads and enjoy the drive? It sounds like you will have a truck full of tools and parts and lots of good pre tip advice. Make sure you have a way to secure all that stuff. Secured (to the bed) cross bed lockable tool box. X100 on a spare FOMOCO ignition module, fuel filter or 2. And a solid back up plan it if all goes south. It's no fun figuring out what to do next, if you have a major breakdown alongside the road at midnight.
Also check out Canon City/Royal Gorge Bridge and Park. And for the brave at heart take Phantom Canyon Road (between Canon City and Penrose) to Victor and Cripple creek and come out in the old mining casino towns. I ran that road in a 4wd rental Dodge years ago...
Getting close. This my checklist. I took some of the things that were specific to my truck (like the custom radio set up). Just a useful reference if anyone wants it.Truck
Replace wiper blades
Drive truck 350 miles to break in engine and then change oil
Hand cleaner and shop towels.
Glass fuses, test light and some repair wire.
Need hand cleaner. I have a big bag full of clean cloth towels. Switch to a blade fuse box, but have a box of extras. Since I just rewired, I am bringing my bag of wire and all my tools. Have a multi-meter and test wire.
Today is the day. Made the road trip without any problems. Saw lots of cows and windmills. Took 70 to 359. 359 was a much more interesting drive. Last fill up was e85. When I got into Colorado Springs it was starting to sputter. I am definitely going to adjust my carb to run leaner. I might also advance my timing after breakfast. Wish me luck.
Congrats on making it out there, glad to hear everything went ok. Always call 719-385-7325 and select option 1 for current road conditions to the top. Be safe and enjoy the drive up Pikes Peak, it is beautiful way up there. Mind your braking on the way back down, eng braking recommended. Check out the Halfway Picnic Area and the Crystal Reservoir visitors center. And post some pics of the trip out and to the top.
