As some of you know, the 302 in my truck took a dive last fall. I've had the truck sitting for about 8 months now and when i took the motor out i put some of the parts in my bed. I put the tonneau cover over it and closed it up. Inside was my starter and alternator, and after going back there to get them I realised there was a leak and my alternator and starter had water in them, probably for quite awhile. The alternator was stuck when I tried to turn it, but I was able to free it under hand pressure. It'll spin but not all that smoothly. The starter I havn't played with but I was able to pour rusty color water out of it. Now I know this isn't good at all, but are these parts definitely toast or salvageable?
Let's just say you were able to spray enough WD-40 into both of them and you got both to the point that they worked OK - how would you feel about getting in the truck and driving it across the country?
If the answer is not very good - then why would you use them at all? Unless you keep spares with you, have AAA, or a lot of friends wherever you go, I guess.
If it were my truck, I wouldn't use them. Bite the bullet, consider it a lesson learned, and get new ones.
I talked to my dad today because a buddy of his rebuilds starters and alternators, so i think I may just drop them off to him and have him re-do them...
