Heater Core Needed...

I need to find a new OEM style copper heater core for my 1979 F350. Does anyone know of a source for an OEM heater core? I have found that the 'Made in China' aluminum replacement heater cores are not manufactured correctly and will not fit these trucks. I have seen this problem a couple of times now. These aluminum replacement heater cores are made 1/4 inch wider than the OEM copper heater cores and they just will not fit...

Get the Ford part number and google it, maybe you can find NOS. Or if you have a radiator shop nearby see if they can re-core it. Most of the time they can. It will be more expensive but you'll have something that fits and is better quality.

All the parts stores around my area sell the smaller aluminum ones now. The only problem I had putting one in was the inlet / outlet pipes were shorter and didn't stick out of the firewall far enough. I took it back, looked at another one and it was the same. I went to next parts store and they had the same one, so I took that one and bought two narrow gear clamps to replace the stock wider gear clamps. It was close but they were able to get behind the bead roll on the pipes. I didn't like it but it blows just as warm as a copper one.

ranger429's hard work tracking down parts, shows right here.
For anyone looking for a brass/copper core Advanced Auto part number 398304 is the correct one. It is also the same core that fits early, 68'ish mustangs.
Laurel Mountain Mustang had them. THEY ARE CLOSED DOWN NOW.
Part number just in case it is needed in the future:

For A/C 18476-1A
For non A/C 18476-2
1973-79 BRONCO HEATER CORE - WITHOUT A/C - BRASS | Laurel Mountain MustangHAD THEM AT ONE TIME NOW CLOSED DOWN, DEAD LINK
Also NAPA, but makes sure and ask are they aluminum or copper? NOW CARRY SPECTRA BRAND that are ALUMINIUM
Copper is what you want.
Heater core, high output heater C6OZ-18476-B
Antique Auto Supply, Arlington, TX (817) 275=2381 CLOSED DOWN
Wesley Obsolete Parts, Liberty, KY (606) 787-5293
Dennis Carpenter, Concord, NC also HAD 1 but they have it listed under C60Z-18476-B, the third digit is "zero" instead of the correct letter "O". (704) 786-8139
Additional C6OZ-18476-B heater core applications:
1966/70 Falcon w/o A/C / 1966/72 Fairlane/Torino w/o A/C / 1971/73 Mustang/Cougar w/o A/C
Heater core w/ factory A/C or hi-low comfort vent system

I've contacted a cooling specialty shop and awaiting reply. It's discouraging that the parts jobbers sell items that they must know do not fit. I am reasonably certain that I am not the first one to have encountered this problem...

Did it fit properly in the heater box? The core I got from NAPA stuck out of the heater box 0.25 inches. I was unable to reinstall the metal cover...

I've had problems with these 'Chinese' aluminum cores for Ford cars too! The inlet/outlet pipes where not even in the same position and they wouldn't even fit through the holes in the firewall ! How do these companies get away with selling these things? Zero quality control...

(Buyer Beware. I've found a couple of E-Bay listings that show a picture of an OEM copper heater core but the description says that it's aluminum. Even the dimensions where wrong. It shows the core width to be 6.0 inches whereas the core they sell you is actually 6.25 inches. 0.25 inches too wide to fit.)

@Iaferdavid

Thanks for that info. It is most appreciated. However I've already checked with RockAuto and they say that the replacement core that I need is aluminum. In any case, I've now found a coolant shop that says that they can rebuild my original copper OEM style heater core no problem so I think I'll be going that route. Many thanks to all for the posts, replies and comments. You all have been most helpful...

The one I got from NAPA was aluminum and the core itself way too small. They used flanges to make up for the difference in size. Didn't heat worth a darn. I found a correct new brass / copper replacement from Jeff's Bronco Graveyard.

With or without Air Conditioning? If with, is it factory installed or dealer installed? If dealer installed, there are two types.

In 1983, Ford replaced all the 1973/79 heater cores, the replacements are smaller than the original, so a kit was required to fill in the gaps.
