T98 Bell housing

Hi Folks ... looking for some help. Thanks to previous advice from the smart guys on here I have managed to locate a T98 synchro silent 4 speed tranny for my 49 F68, but unfortunately I do not have the bell housing. Given that the tranny I removed from my truck is a T9 which has the clutch housing as part of the tranny case, does the bell housing I require bolt from the tranny to the block? Or do I need a hogshead which attached to the flywheel housing that I already have? Below are photos of the flywheel housing I have plus the two trannies. Thanks for any help.

This is my existing flywheel housing

This is the T98 I want to install

This is the T9 I removed

I believe that the part of the bell housing that is on your T-9 is removable and would possibly bolt to the T-98. I believe the bolts are inside the bell. Here is a picture of the two parts of the bell housing bolted together for paint.

Neale, What engine are you running? That bell looks like an aftermarket conversion bell for a small block Ford?

I have the 226 in mine. Factory parts I believe, at least they match the Illustration Manual.

Sorry, Rich, posts were overlapping. The T9 and T98 use different bell adapters. The bolt pattern is totally different on the trans end. Neale has an early Canadian version T9 which does not have a removeable front section. It was originally designed to bolt directly to the back of a 59AB engine. Canada used the old style case for much longer than US production.

This looks like an old Trans-Dapt, or similar, adapter bellhousing to mate a SBF to the original truck trans. Or I could be mistaken.

If you're stuffing a 302 in your truck, you could be better served to find a later model trans to go with it that is fully synchro'd and fits to the SBF with more readily available parts.

What about it looks like an adapter? Without pulling out a spare, it looks like a stock flathead clutch cover to me. A SBF adapter wouldn't need the can for the starter drive.

you are correct Wayne, the T9 clutch cover is an integral part of the transmission and used this flywheel housing to adapt to the motor. So I’m not sure if I need just the clutch cover to adapt to this housing or a larger bell housing which connects tranny to motor.

Hi Rich, the clutch housing is an integral part of the T9 tranny. But your first photo appears to show the piece that I need, that is, the housing between the tranny and the flywheel housing which I already have. Any idea what you call this piece? Is this a hogshead adapter?

I will defer to the experts. I just reused what I removed.

The fact that it looked like new, cast aluminum and the bolt spacing at the block mounting surface where I marked looked, from memory, like the 302 adapter I have. You're right about the starter can, I didn't consider that. I was focused on the bolt holes and the overall look. It just threw me off a bit. Sorry for the hijack. Back to our regularly scheduled programming.

You need one of these. They come on the heavy duty three speed in Canada. They are kind of hard to find up here. All the 4 speed crash boxes in Canada are similar to yours. ,Doug.
