Lost Power/Boost

Same 2004 F250 I've had for 15 plus years. Almost 275k on it now. When it got bullet proofed 100k ago, the hot side boost boot took a dump and the shop stuck a scab they had laying around on it. Kept running fine until the last few weeks. Have a guy about 20 min away that's been working on mine. He is a couple months out to work on stuff, but said replace that boot. Didn't do any good. To me, while driving, it sounds almost like an old gas engine with an exhaust leak out the manifold. Any ideas what the issue is here? I hate to do it, but I kinda need the thing and don't know that I can wait that long to get it in.

Given the sound you've described it appears to be a simple leak. Locations (some candidates):

Manifold and turbine housing

Compressor manifold hoses

Not sure how old that turbo is but it's probably also do for a cleaning, rebuild or replacement --worn out turbine, compressor wheel, bearings, etc. I like using the 03-4 Turbos (even on the newer, but you have to adapt for mounting changes)-- sound better, more geddy up, faster spool up.

Turbo was replaced under warranty at around 40k in 07. I was deployed when I bought the thing and it sat a year and a half before I got to drive it, ate the turbo in the process.

I’ve got a couple other issues that need addressed before I can really drive it any more. It got all new injectors in the last six months, and I hadn’t really had to do a lot to her in a while, so I suppose it’s just that time.

was there a pop when it happened? I've lost a few boots. replacing it is not just simply replacing. you need to degrease the metal, check for warpage of the flares, it can help to scuff it with steel wool as well. I have seen some people put on hairspray to help it stick as well until it really seats after a few heat cycles. The most common boots I've lost are right after the turbo, and right before the intercooler.

I would check all of your boost on the boost side (hot & cold side of intercooler). Usually you can spot the leak as it will be oily with residue from the CCV system. They are all pretty easy to change. Get a quality boot like Riffraff or Motorcraft if you prefer OEM.

Do you have the plastic CAC tube on the driver's side going to the intake elbow? If so, it cracks a lot down at the intercooler. That's where you'll see the residue 50 refers to. I'd hunt the pic-u-part yards for a metal one.

No pop. However, that old boot was worn the heck out. I was unaware that I needed to clean it up when putting the new one on. Got to get brakes/power steering fixed later this week, it's sitting in town. I'll try and mess with it when I get it back from up there.
