Battery box

Sorry if it's been talked to death and along with crs. On just a simple tongue mount battery box what do you use for a strap? If the box is bolted to frame support will the lid blow off? I see several on the side of the road. Getting tired of replacing those origami nylon straps that disintegrate at sunrise like a vampire

The lid will certainly blow off.
I simply discard the wimpy strap and use a ratchet strap.

Jumping off a bit here,

Is the battery considered secure enough loose inside the box with the box strapped to the tray? Assuming that the battery fits properly in the box?

On my previous Jayco the battery box was not bolted to the tray. The nylon strap went around tray. It didn't seem to have any issues and I eventually added a second box and battery that then prevented the potential for any side to side motion that the single box had. The current ORV had two battery boxes bolted to the tray and the nylon strap just went around the boxes. I swapped those out for a single dual GC2 battery box that is bolted to the tray and I'm using a pair of ratchet straps to secure the lid. I never had any concerns about the batteries in the single battery boxes being too loose or causing issues by sliding around. I did add some flexible foam wedges to both ends of the GC2's to prevent them from sliding around and possibly stressing the cabling since they are both in the same box.

This is just a standard Camco battery box and the battery fits snug without room for shifting..

Thanks for the input. I might add some wedges if I can find some. I like that idea to keep things extra firm.

I think bolting the box down is good too. Rather than just rely solely on the strap.

I use the Noco Snap-top battery boxes, and that straps that come with them. Not the best straps, but they seem to do the trick for a few years so far. I think I'd probably replace with the webbing straps and buckles etc from a local camping supply store if I had to.

My battery box is welded onto the tongue just in front of the winch box. The lid has a locking clasp (that can be pinned or locked) that is welded onto the box along with the hinges. Since everything is welded the chance of the battery/box being stolen is extremely slim.

@JalopyJake that's a great battery box. Little excessive, for most of us, but I'm impressed.

I need a buddy who is a welder and who would do this type of work for beer. I have lots of silly ideas for a welder . .

Yes, especially when you want something built once to last considering it sits outside in the weather. I used scrap metal I had Layin around and an old buzz box arc welder. I realize not everyone has access to a welder and metal or any creativity but it was Easy to do and don’t have to worry about replacing flimsy junk ever so often, tearing it off, or some crack head lifting my expensive CAT battery. To each his own but it’s perfect for my situation.

For what it’s worth, I intended it as a compliment.
