I spoke with my local Ford dealership this am regarding their plans to address the recall. Historically they have referred all glasswork out to my friend that owns the best glass shop in town. The Service manager told me they were indeed outsourcing this work to my friend's shop but they were not setup yet to begin doing them. He said that 9 out of 10 windshields that had been cut out had cracked and were replaced. He told me they didn't have enough windshields in stock at this time to begin working on them and didn't want a parking lot full of trucks waiting on windshields. He asked me if I would check back with him in a couple of weeks.
I can't say that all Ford dealerships outsource their glass work. I knew my local one did and has for years.
There are other threads about this recall already. That said, when this recall was first announced, I checked to see what the cost of windshield replacement was through safelite. The OEM windshields with "Ford" on the top of them were, and still are, on a nationwide back order. Windshields, especially new ones, are notoriously difficult to remove without damage and I fully expect more than a 50% fallout rate.
Myself, and many others in this forum, have decided to "opt out" of the recall. If they shatter the windshield upon removal, you will have glass in your interior for the remainder the time you own it, you risk the installer damaging the truck or poorly reinstalling the windshield causing leaks or worse. To me, it is more of a risk to have somebody attempt to "fix" this than it is to just leave it alone.

There sure are other posts here and elsewhere and none of them shared the info I did about the outsourcing of the work which is why I made a new post about it. As far as whether or not you or many others want to have the recall done has zero to do with my post. Furthermore are you aware the passenger airbag relies on the windshield to properly deploy and align with the passenger? The recall arises from the concern that in the event of a head on collision the windshield would fly off, airbags deploy and not protect the passenger. In my opinion that is a big deal. I'm responsible for every single person in my truck at all times. You do you and that's cool.
As far as the windshield I wouldn't allow them to reinstall the old one. I'm totally ok with using the non ford branded glass since it is made by the same company (Carlite) sans the Ford logo. My friend's shop wouldn't allow the glass to be reinstalled anyways. Maybe you don't understand windshield glass and how it works? It doesn't shatter. It cracks but stays together. Hope this helps alleviate any glass in the cab concerns you may have. As far as damaging the truck or leaks this company has been in business since before I was born and are the best in the area. Not to say they don't make mistakes but in my lifetime they have never done any damage to any of my vehicles nor have I ever had to take it back due to leaks. Sounds like you need a new glass company.
The title of your post is "Windshield Recall". Your whole post is about said recall. My response was about, you guessed it, the same recall and the issues surrounding it. I was not attacking you or your post, though the subject of the job being outsourced was certainly brought up in other threads.
Ford is likely going to farm this job out to the lowest bidder, so regardless of the glass company I prefer to use, Ford is going to use whichever one suits their budget. So good for your friend for getting the job. If the job they do is high quality, I hope he gets a lot of lifelong customers out of it.
Windshields certainly do shatter. While they remain "mostly contained", there is certainly material that will make its way out of the windshield and quickly scatter into your interior.
Back on topic.......hopefully. I called my dealer and they use a very reputable local vendor. I asked if they had OEM replacement windshields and was told yes the vendor has carlite in stock. I asked if the replacements were ford branded like mine and then the OEM became a non Ford branded carlite that is identical to the OEM except without the Ford logo. The dealer assured me that carlite is the Ford OEM supplier and that Ford has authorized carlite as the only acceptable replacement. My dealer also advised that the local vendor has done 10 so far and only one has cracked. My biggest concern is safety and I feel confident the replacement will get that done. I would prefer an identical windshield with Ford on it. The biggest disappointment will be the loss of the Kentucky truck plant sticker. I have had one on my trucks for years now. I have kind of gotten used to the thing and like the reminder that my truck was built a couple states over.
CNLB I don't remember where but on one of the sd forums/ tremor forums / FB pages some one had a windshield replaced and wanted the Kentucky truck plant decal as well I do not know how but they managed to get a new one . So it is possible to get a new decal lol maybe contacting the Kentucky Plant might do it .

Thanks, maybe mine will go out and back in without breaking. If not, I know we have some KY truck plant workers and others on the forum who will probably be able to get one.
I also have been thinking about this recall, having just received my notification last week.
I'm a "If it aint' broke don't fix it" kind of guy. The replies above are valid, but as a few said,
OEM replacement, seals, etc. Do I want to chance it since all appears fine right now?
I'm goin to "ride it out" a bit and see what happens.
I replace a windshield about once a year. So I see no big deal in replacing windshield. whether it's under a recall or just because hiway sander was putting out too coarse of sand in the winter. It's all the same. Pull the old windshield, put a new one in and maybe calibrate the Lane Keep, or Rain sensing
