Locking front hubs

I have always left my hubs in "Auto" position and never had any problems. But, today I am not getting front wheel drive in 4 High or 4 Low.. I rotated the hubs to "Lock" and it works fine.. What should I look for ?

I don't know much about newer trucks (meaning newer than 1997), so I don't know how the auto hubs work on a 2015. But a decade or so earlier they operated using vacuum. If that was still the case in 2015 I'd look for a vacuum leak.

I also know the earlier vacuum hubs used to commonly fail locked, meaning something inside bound up so they wouldn't move. Might be worth pulling them off and cleaning them.

But if anyone who knows what they're talking about responds I'd listen to them before you listen to me.

as bob said, vacuum leak. either a cracked line, or more than likely a dried out hub seal leaking
