I belive their was an option for manual or automatic right??? What do you me "when would you"?? sorry kinda lost here...you driving down the road and putting it in 4wd? stopped? stuck?? If your driving and you have manuals locked in or automatics you can put it in 4 HI with no problems, never 4 LO, always be stopped for 4 LO.
If your talking the hubs themselves it'll be pretty tricky to turn hubs in while driving
well lets see, gotta lot of questions to answer lol , well i think the trucks got manual lockin hubs because they got the *** to turn on the front hubs, i know to stop before putting it in 4 LO.....i told my friend the same thing but he didnt listen lol, yea, like if im about to go up a real snowy driveway, or drive out onto the lake towing the snowmobiles and theres alot of snow, i gotta stop, put it in either 4 hi or lo and then get out and engage them...right? and while they are engaged, can i switch between 4 hi and 4 lo? and to go back to 2 wheel i gotta disengage the hubs before i do so right? and if you have the hubs unlocked and u got it in 4 wheel, then its just a regular limites slip up front, right?
If the roads are bad I lock the hubs in before i leave the house, then i can shift in and out of 4 wheel from the cab. It doesn't hurt anything to have the hubs locked in while being in 2 wheel drive, just unnessary turning of the front axle. I have the auto hubs but i like to turn them manually every now and then. Just my $.02
I must be an idiot or something. If you turn your hubs from auto to locked doesn't that mean you are in full time 4 wheel drive regardless of the ESOF control in the cab? I thought the auto position is the setting you want if you want to be able to use the ESOF control.
while they are engaged, can i switch between 4 hi and 4 lo?
Not while driving. In order to go in or out of 4lo, the truck has to be stopped, in neutral, and foot on brake.

Not necessarily. You can leave the hubs locked in and just put the transfer case in 2wd. This is how I usually run if there is a possibility of things getting sticky.

Nope, if you have the hubs unlocked and T-case in 4hi or lo, you are in either 2hi or 2lo. The front wheels will do nothing.
