Tow/Haul button question
This is a totally incorrect answer.... It would be correct if the OP was asking about the "OD OFF" button that the earlier 4R100 trucks came with, in that setup the button does exactly what it says and what the above post describes. However, since the question was about the Tow/Haul button which the newer trucks come with it's completely different. Using Tow/Haul changes the shift strategy to better handle a higher combined weight, OD is still available, and using it when not towing is perfectly fine.
Here is how they are used to create six speeds. At no time are all six speeds used. I'll get to that later.
Gear Front Rear Overall ratio
1 - 1:1 - 3.11:1 - 3.11:1
2 .71:1 - 3.11:1 - 2.2:1
3 1:1 - 1.54:1 - 1.54:1
4 .71:1 - 1.54:1 - 1.09:1
5 1:1 - 1:1 - 1:1
6 .71:1 - 1:1 - 0.71:1
Normal operation is 1-2-3-5-6, which is five speeds. When the trans is colder than 0°F it shifts 1-2-3-4-6. Still five speeds, but different ratios. Fourth gear is also used in full power downshifts from sixth gear when the vehicle speed is a bit too high to downshift to third gear. In a narrow window of speed, it can shift 6-4, which will give a bit more acceleration than a 6-5 would give.
Tow/haul changes when the trans upshifts and downshifts. All gears are available. It also provides for coast braking in all gears. With tow/haul turned off, coast braking is only available in sixth gear.
The trans was designed so that you can use or not use tow/haul as you wish. You won't harm it either way.
