Hey guys, I bought an old dump truck with problems. She’s a 97 4x4 130,000 miles with automatic Transmission. I drove it home about 70 miles and it ran great. Drove nice, stopped nice. But when she gets warm the oil flows through the oil pan faster than I can dump it in! I got a new pan and a bunch of other stuff like shocks, tie rods, breaks, etc.
Another problem I have is a fuel leak. One of the two steel lines by the steering box rusted through. I want to cut both of them off and run rubber lines all the way to the tank. I’ve only got the rear tank left . Is there any electrical B.S. to worry about? Can I just unplug the tank selector? Is there anything else in between? Tips for bleeding the new lines would be great too! Thanks
I've heard that the fuel gauge won't work if the selector is un plugged, even if bypassing it. Others may have a work around for that. I also DIG your removable engine crossmember

That sucks. My gauge doesn’t work now but I wanted to fix it. My white truck only has the rear tank. I had to shove some bolt in the fuel lines for the front tank or gas pours out. I should probably study up on the efuel set up.
The crossmember is a fun project .... it kinda sucks but it’s fun. I should have took more pictures while I was doing it. I see most people want to pull the motor. Funny nobody makes a kit 3 piece bolt in crossmember !$!$!$ 😎
Any good threads on installing gauges? I’m curious about a custom race dash. I’ll throw the speedometer right in the trash ... unless someone wants it... 130,000 😃
Have you dropped the tank to see if the float is broken off? Inside our tanks it's very simple.
Would be worth going through anyway to clean out the gunk and replace or delete the plastic pick up foot that always crumbles on these things.
I haven’t dropped the tank yet I refuse to drop the tank for that.. because it’s a dump truck. I just have to dump it and there’s the tank 😎
so I have a few more dollars should I do gauges or down pipe? I did the big air cleaner already. I’ll do the gauges before a tuner for sure but how bout just pipe and air cleaner?
I got the xmember back together and the transmission pan/filter in. The old pan was a b@tch ... 2 bolts on one side and 2 bolt on the other side wanted to fight me. I had to weld a nut to one of them so I could turn it out. I hope to have it useable this weekend
I would look into boost leak check the truck and replacing up pipes if yours are leaking.
Between gauges and a downpipe I'd say gauges first if you plan on putting it to work, least that way you can monitor EGTs with the restrictive downpipe.
I would remove up pipes to make pulling the downpipe an easy job. I cut mine out and wish I would have pulled the dang pipes. Wouldn't have had to cut anything that way and would have been less of a pain overall.
Looks awesome so far! Can't wait to see what else you have planned.
I could use the cluster. Swap someone a gasser tach for the Diesel then my 4.9 has a tach!
Agree, do uppiipes and downpipes at same time. It all leaks anyway I am sure.
thats not not what I wanted to hear. I didn’t notice any exhaust leaks. I haven’t ran it at all though except to get it home. Everything liquid was leaking😃
Up pipes are $pendy!
Is it worth it to build my own down pipe?
it seems straight pipe is an option?
I see gauges are either $160 or like $600!! I’m leaning towards $160
this truck isn’t a daily driver...I’m going to sneak on back roads to the gravel pit once in a while. Then beat the sh-t out of it the rest of the time. I might even take the doors off for the summer.... the drivers side doesn’t close anyway
The downpipe isn't worth in my opinion doing on your own when you can get one for 100 dollars.
If you have the original up pipes with no bellows, it's not if they aren't leaking now, other than they WILL in the future. I know folks that have welded in bellows to their stock up pipes to fix the issue too on a cheaper budget. Long as you have the fab skills, a good set of bellows should be all you need.
