Hey guys. I've got old gas dripping from the tank. It's a rear mounted tank. Has anyone had any problems with them having leaks or the unit inside the tank? Please let me know.
Where is the drip coming out at? Is it from the front sending unit install area? Or from a rear corner? I have seen the anti chaff material get worn out/rust in the back corner (under the support straps) rust a hole in the tank.

It hard to say. I'll have to drop the tank anyways to get the bad gas out of it. But it seems like theres no place on the bottom. But like it's coming from somewhere on the side or top and dripping of the bottom.
A wise FTE member once said..and I quote here. "There are two differences between the tanks. Tanks with EEC have a hole in the top center of the tank. A rubber grommet and check valve are pressed into the hole. A line goes from the check valve along the inside of the passenger side frame rail to the engine compartment where it hooks up to a charcoal canister. Non-EEC tanks don't have this hole. The other difference is the nipple for the breather line that is located right next to the nipple for the filler hose is located 180 degrees opposite. If you are going from an EEC tank to a non-EEC tank you must also change the fuel cap to a vented style. The EEC tanks are vented through the EEC system and use a sealed fuel cap. Non-EEC tanks vent through the fuel filler cap. If you run a non-EEC tank and a sealed cap the minimum is you'll have fuel starvation problems, at worst a collapsed fuel tank. - Is your truck a long bed 4WD? Does it have evaporative emission system? There are two possibilities with the plastic tank. 79 F150-350 regular cab, 133" WB 4WD, w/ evap. emissions system, 24.8 gallon mid-ship plastic tank D7TZ-9002-C Same w/o evaporative emissions system 26.3 gallon plastic tank D7TZ-9002-D Fuel sender 76-up F100-350 >s/n C00,000 Use with aft axle steel tank, includes gasket D7TZ-9275-D
Maybe that rubber grommet on top of the tank is leaking?
It's a 2wd regular cab long bed. The tank is behind the axle. I have never dropped a fuel tank before and not sure how to remove the old gas in it. But not sure about the eec tank. The truck is a '79 custom.
Ever hear of a garden hose siphon trick? CAUTION old gas tastes nasty. Even a old boat type prime ball reversed direction, but that is a slow process due to the hose size. You want to get out as much as possible other wise the tank is REAL heavy and a finger smasher for sure, if done wrong.
Do you have a small rubber vent line coming off the top area of the tank and heading up the passenger side frame rail? Is so you have a EEC tank.
If it is the original rank and you see holes when you drop it, I say go ahead and get a new tank. We tried to patch a few rust holes in ours and it didn't didnt work. Just wasted time and about 20.00 worth of paint etc...
I would take a sharp punch or chisel and knock a hole in it letting it drain into a container. Doesn't make any difference now because it's junk. For all the more a new plastic tank cost vs a new steel tank I would get the plastic one. Bronco Grave Yard seems to have the best deal on them at the moment.
We also got and used the anti-chaff rubber from LMC on the tank straps. Our straps (upper and lower) were in good shape so we just cleaned and painted them with rust converter. We could have figured something else out, but they fit really well and saved us time.
I purchased a replacement tank for my 1979 on EBAY. Currently offered at $73 with free shipping,. Its very good quality and fit perfectly. I actually purchased a 1978 tank w/out eec as my efi fuel pump has a built in vent.
EEC = Electronic Engine Control system aka on-board computer. Only 1979 LTD/Grand Marquis 351W sold new in CA have it. What you're referring to is the Evaporative Emission System that is abbreviated Evap/Em
ND all the jazz I copied and pasted came from YOU a long time ago. Did the name change?
Jetfixer where did you get that tank (ebay vendor name?) and what EFI pump (brand/manufacturer) set up did you go with?
The tank came from eBay seller 1aautomotive.com and the fuel pump is a FI Tech. I went with the 340LPH pump. FI Tech's customer service is outstanding.
