I have an 05 Expedition with the 5.4L Engine. Around 190K. For the last couple of weeks the Expy has been stumbling and hesitating under acceleration. Check engine light stays on steady, If I give it a lot of gas (Like passing someone) It stumbles and the power drops and the check engine light starts flashing, and then when things calm down the light goes back to not flashing. This only happens when I step on the gas to get moving quickly. In park, I can raise the RPMs up and down quickly with no problem. I get the P0302 Code. It is due for some maintenance. It hasn't had plugs or a new fuel filter in a while. I did run some fuel cleaner through it to no avail. It was intermittent but now seems to be here to stay until I figure it out. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.
Swap the COP with cylinder 1 and see if the code follows. When you remove the COP, check for water or coolant in the plug well and check the rubber boots for cracks or tears. Use a long vacuum hose and listen to the fuel injector ticking at idle. If you have close to 100K on the plugs, you may be due for a change.
No, it is OVER due for some maintenance. Plan on replacing the #2 spark plug and COP immediately, before you ruin your catalytic converter. Replace the rest of the plugs as soon as reasonably possible.
Thanks for the replies. I will change out the plugs and see if that helps. I have an extra COP somewhere. I will swap that out as well. The plugs are overdue. I bought it at 152k and it now has 190k. How hard are the plugs to change? I had a 2000 Expy with the 5.4. I changed the plugs on it and about a month later it puked one of them out. Did Ford fix that issue? I had heard they did. Any tips or tricks for someone with giant hands?
Well, it all depends on when and how the previous plugs were changed. The plugs on these have a habit of seizing in the head and breaking when you attempt to remove the plugs. Check out the linked videos for two methods of removal. If you break a plug, you're gonna have to buy the Lisle 65600 plug removal tool.

You probably have already fixed it, but .... Check the torque. I had two plugs blow out. I used inserts. The first one went fine; I screwed my engine fixing the second one. It was #4, and I'm not sure yet what went wrong yet. It was a pita to get to. so I'm guessing I either set it to deep, ( I didn't use the camera) or unburnt fuel washed the cylinder. Ol' Blue 5.4 ran pretty good for a long time tho.

Alot of experience with these codes over the past few years, Obviously plugs, coil pack, and fuel injectors need to be checked as stated before. These engines love to pool any water or fluid that gets into the compartment directly on the coil packs which will eventually lead to a misfire. Look for fluid build up, typically it will be from the coolant "T" sitting right over the engine or from the intake manifold plastic gasket at the crossover. Also a final check is to poor some water on your windshield and see if it leaks onto the engine, I had a bad rubber gasket which cost me a lot of time and money chasing the issue. Explained why she only ran rough after it rained...

I had the same issue a couple years ago... If you haven't already, go ahead and just change all the plugs and COPs.
The farthest back cylinder on the passenger side of mine also had water sitting on the COP from an ac line so check for that too.
