Hi Guys
Have a 2006 King Ranch F150 with a 5.4L engine. The truck starts and runs smooth from start up, then starts missing like crazy and will barely run after driven a few miles. We had the codes checked and it said to replace the cam position sensors. We replaced them and it does the same thing after driven a while. When it acts up, you can disconnect the battery and it starts and runs fine until it acts up again, missing like crazy and barely running. Is there something else possibly wrong or is the timing chain set just plain worn of and needs replaced? Thanks for your help.
Mike
What were the codes? That said, there are no codes that say “replace that sensor”. With DTCs, it’s more likely telling you, “Hey, I’ve got trouble, check this out!”
Are you headed for a timing chain job? Maybe. Many 3V 4.6/5.4 engines have that fate.
The sensors are "sensing" a problem thus doing their job. People that work in parts houses know as much about diagnosing as the kids flipping burgers at McDs.

I sold parts for 2 years and the worst customers were the ones who wanted me to diagnose and sell them exactly the right part. Who expects a cashier to sell you the correct part without even looking at your vehicle?
Even worse corporate advertised us like we were master mechanics and not just cashiers. A cashier making $8 an hour isn't going to diagnose your car.
While I don't expect parts salespeople to be able to diagnose vehicles they do come in handy in that they see the most common parts being sold in volume for certain issues every day. Somewhat good advice for mechanical parts such as suspension, brakes, etc. However for sensors like O2's, crank and cam, volume sale doesn't work for me. This is because some diy people don't know how to interpret their scan tool results and the first thing they change needlessly are sensors.

The description of the code is misleading. Your symptoms point to low oil pressure when warm and worn/broken timing chain guides. Most likely it will need the engine replaced. These are not cost effective to try to patch up. There are too many problem areas that need work.
