Speedometer cable re install

1977 f150 4x4 c6 np205

Speedometer cable originally was bouncing around, going all the way to 80 and not return while driving or just back and fourth .

The mechanic bought a brand new speedometer cable, it was installed into a rebuilt transmission/transfer case by the shop while that was being done. The problem remained with the sporadic cable so I took the cable out of the dash , installed a new speedometer gauge off eBay and currently trying to get the cable back into the gauge .

Got it barely inserted but it is easily pulled out if you tug on it even after attaching the white clip. Also the sporadic gauge problem remains. It is very loud you can here the cable turning behind the gauge, sounds like metal bearings rotating to best describe the sound. I even greased up the cable on the inside.

How the heck do I re install this cable correctly and make the gauge work properly again ?

thanks !

I bet your speedo "head" assembly is bad as a far as the not working and noise problem.

Maybe unbolt and pull the cable out of the transmission, and try turning it as you attempt to get it engaged with the 'chuck' in the distributor.

The speedometers I've seen from inside had the cable driving a piece with two arms sticking out, with magnets on them. Those magnets fly around a metal disk which is directly connected to the needle. There is a delicate copper spring which acts to pull the metal disk and needle to 0 MPH when the magnets aren't orbiting/flying around the metal disk.
The flying magnets act against that spring tension to make the needle indicate whatever speed.

If the bushings are worn out, the assembly will get sloppy enough to where the flying magnets are hitting the metal disk, which causes the needle to jump up abruptly. Sometimes a smoother cable will get rid of that problem, but if a choppy cable is used for long enough of a time, it will wear out those bushings in the speedometer head.

Speedo

Sounds like speedo cable, as far as rebuilding you can do it yourself take your time and should have no problems, I would get you a donor speedo from salvage yard and install, you can reset the odometer to match miles as well
