Error Messages

For the past couple of weeks I've had a series of error messages intermittently flashing that functions are not available - hill start assist, memory recall, pre-collision assist, cruise control, AdvanceTrac, parking aid, and ABS. The dealership had the truck several days and couldn't get any of the codes to trip. They could see the error message history but I was told without a code actively displaying there were too many possibilities to investigate further. Told me that next time anything happens drive directly to the dealership so they could hook-up to the computer. Fast forward to last night and I'm driving on the highway with cruise control on and the truck starts shifting all over the place while the speedometer is jumping from 70 to 45 and a slew of random numbers in between. A few minutes later all of the error messages start flashing again and have done so every time I've started the car since.

Anyone else with similar experiences or have an idea what the issue is? I'm a bit dumbfounded that in this day and age the service guy can tell me every time I opened and shut the tailgate but not what is causing these issues. Unfortunately, I'm out of state for the weekend so Monday is the earliest I can get it back to the dealership. Even then, it sounds like I'm going to need to drive around until an issue happens then high-tail it to the service center. Seems like a recipe for a bigger safety issue to me.

check the connections by the parking brake for issues.

I would also check all the wiring connects at the rear around the spare..Disconnect them, check for moisture and or corrosion. If all looks good, fill with electrical grease and go through each one. There have been members who have similar issues due to moisture. Droping the spare can make things easier to access all of them
I have tried to do this to every electrical connector I have come across while working or cleaning the truck. I also have the EXACT truck, less the ultimate package

Good luck

I had a similar situation in my 2021. Turned out to be a bad steering angle sensor. Truck drove fine but after a little bit of time it would disable a bunch of the active systems including hill decent and even the drive mode selection option.

Sounds like it could be a ground fault issue, or as suggested a bad connection somewhere.

I hate to tell u. But I’ve been having the same issue and the dealership just had my truck for 2 weeks. As hard as it is to imagine, they also couldn’t duplicate the problem. But after I got my truck back less then 1 mile from dealer the dash board lit up again. So I turn around and head straight to dealer. Their final response was because I have a lift and bigger tires. Told me to remove everything and bring it back to them. So I also am looking for a fix that doesn’t involve removing lift and tires.

The best part is my FordPass app records every time this happens. I provided receipts that proves these issues were happening before I even purchased or installed lift! But of course Ford doesn’t want to hear it.

Did this happen to occur when driving in the rain or after driving in the rain / through water / etc.?

It’s happens all the time. Sometimes rain. Sometimes wind. Snow. Ice. Sunny. Full moon. Sometimes when I’m pulling a trailer. Doesn’t matter. Sometimes happens immediately after pulling out of driveway. Sometimes after driving 1/2 hr. Can’t seem to find how/why it happens or what triggers it. But if I shut it down and restart everything is good. Sucks on long hauls because cruise control doesn’t work!

Do you use the parking brake and let it snap home when you pull the release handle? I had a very similar issue on my 2013. I disconnected and reconnected the main harnesses by the parking brake and all the issues went away. After that I only used the parking brake when absolutely necessary and rode it back up with my foot.

Update on the error code messages I was receiving:

In addition to everything described above, I had a few instances where the truck would randomly accelerate by a few miles per hour (it felt like increasing the speed while using cruise control). The dealership found a fault for a steering angle sensor, made the adjustments, and then drove around for 50 miles without any issues. The next day all of the error messages were back again and I was being told that they may need to call in a Ford engineer to help trouble shoot. A few days later the wrench icon popped-up for the first time and the truck went into "limp" mode after a particularly spastic error message episode that also included the acceleration issue. I left everything showing on the dashboard (didn't hit OK on the steering wheel), drove straight to the dealership, and left the truck running in the parking lot while talking with the service guys. They had their electrical guy take a look and he identified an issue with one of the rear wheel sensors. They removed the part for inspection and found that it was cracked. After a couple of days wait for parts, they replaced the sensor and I've not had any further issues after about 1500 miles.

Such a headache... And the first time I had it at the dealership in early March when they couldn't replicate any of the error messages the service manager said the issues could be caused by dozens of issues... including a faulty wheel sensor.

These vehicles today are just to advanced. I think we were better off in 70-80's when vehicles were simple, sure the mileage wasn't as good and the interiors weren't like four star hotel rooms but if you did have a problem it was easy to find and fix.

I'm all for technology, but feel that technology should make things better, and easier to diagnose, not create additional unrelated problems. It seems that any electrical issue, even minor, can make these trucks go full stupid. Corrosion in one taillight harness, a loose connector at the parking break, weak batteries, any number of sensors going bad can all create the same response and make for a diagnostic nightmare. I guess automotive tech has advanced, but not far enough.
