I have been getting the truck ready for its 9 hour drive to the Grand Nationals in Pigeon Forge next month. So far I have upgraded the wipers, seat belts, replaced the speedo gear so the speedo is now reading correct. I changed out the power steering pump flow valve so the power steering isn't as sensitive as it was.
I have been looking for better mirrors. All the ones they sell look real nice but the passenger side is basically worthless. No one reproduces the original mirrors. You can find them online but are very expensive. So I decided to see if I could make a set to use while driving then can switch them out once at the show if I want.
Here is what I came up with. I bought a 12" piece of 1.5" 6061 Aluminum round bar. After cutting them to size I drilled and tapped them for the mound molt and mirror arm.
1.5" Aluminum round bar, 1/2-20 bolt, 5/16-18 bolt, 1/4-20 barrel nut, 5" mirror, 1/2" ID metal tube.
Nice engineering on the mirrors, Mark. Good luck on your trip. On the three long trips I've taken so far, there were issues each time. First it was a faulty charging system, then bad points, and most recently, weak spark plug wires. In each of these instances, I thought starting out that the parts that ultimately let me down were new enough and in good enough condition to not pose a problem. I guess the take away here is expect the unexpected, and carry some spare parts. I'm sure you and Vickie will have a great adventure you will long remember.
The mirrors and ams look good, Mark. The only better thing, if you wanted, was to put 6 × 8 rectangular mirror heads on. I think I have seen black ones on ebay. Another idea is too put small convex stock on mirrors on.
Do they vibrate at highway speeds?
If enough of us complain to Dennis Carpenter and other manufacturers of parts they might drop the stock mirrors. But their bottom line is profit.
I may upgrade them to bigger mirrors in the end, will see what happens. I haven't had it out yet to see how they do. Was raining here today. Will probably take it out after I get my second covid shot tomorrow morning if it is nice.
