Bad starter already?

I put a new starter in my 360FE less than a year ago. For about the last 2 weeks it's been dragging, mainly when engine is hot. Had the system tested at O'Reilly's and it showed that the starter was bad. Now, I know any component can go bad at any time, but I'm wondering if I sped up it's failure by NOT using any type of heat shield (yes, I'm running headers).
My question is could this starter be salvageable by installing a heat shield or should I just replace the starter? When engine is cold or cooler there's no drag on the starter. I do have lifetime warranty so no cost...just a pain in the ____ to change it.

Thoughts?

A heat shield can only help depending on how close the headers come to the starter. A lot of guys solve this issue by using a mini-starter.
They're a little pricey but worth it IMO. https://www.poormanmotorsports.com/p...m-fits-ford-fe

Header heat can sure affect a starter especially when one is so close. The thing to do would of gotten the starter brand that came with the lifetime warranty. Yea cost more money up front and still can cook out but just walk in and get another one. And then add a head shield off a newer car in a JY, cheap and easy way to put some heat reflection from the headers to stay off the starter.

Second the mini starters, one of the best modifications i made on my FE. Not only does it start the truck instantly, its half the size of the stock monster and thus makes life easier around the headers..... Heres the one I got, there was some shaping I had to do on the starter, a few minutes with the grinder and it fit like a glove...
