A friend of mine has recently placed a 69 F100 body on a 1999 F150 chassis . The 99 chassis has a 4.6 . He kept the 99 instrument cluster and ECN and the pats system ignition had to come with it. The body swap went pretty good. Had to shorten the 99 frame by 8 inches to fit the 69 , but that all went OK. The problem he is having occurred when he tried to put the ignition key in the metal dash of the 69 cab. He gets a trouble code and truck will not start . If he takes the ignition assembly out of the metal dash the truck will start and run fine. We tried making some plastic shielding for the ignition assembly but that was a fail as well. Are we getting some kind of interference from the metal dash or are we grounding somewhere or is there something we have missed ? any help appreciated.
There is a contact that reads the key on the side of the 99 ignition switch. Maybe it is grounding out on the 69 metal dash. Try covering up that contact with electrical tape. Let us know.
Thanks to everyone who responded ! we actually tried the electrical tape with no success. What appears to be happening is the transponder ring is inside the metal dash and chipped key is on the outside of the metal dash. The sheet metal appears to be blocking the signal. The right thing to do would be to have a dealership disable the system , but for now this is what we are going to try.
Go to hardware store and have a regular non chip key cut.. Remove the transponder ring and tape the chip key to it , find a place to mount the 2 out of sight.
Mount the ignition switch (now minus the transponder) in the metal dash and use the hardware store key copy. Sounds good in conversation , but the proof will be in the execution . Thanks again to all that replied. Will let you all know how this turns out.
Sounds like a good plan. That is kinda like how many remote starts are installed. Take steering column apart and tape key to column and then reinstall the plastic covers. Works but security us disabled.
I wsaa going to recommend the same thing. The metal is blocking the weak signal between the key and ignition switch. The zip tie method is the cheapest approach.
Thanks to everyone who gave input to this thread. We removed the transponder ring and taped the chipped key to it , secured the happy couple under the dash out of sight , installed the ignition switch through the 69 dash and used the hardware store cut key to start the truck with no more issues. So lesson learned is the RF signal will not pass through a metal dash. So my friend has a great truck with fuel injection and 4 wheel disks that looks like a great old 69 f100 ! Not the easiest thing to do , but was totally worth it.
