Blue Top - Steering Gear box

I am soon in need of a steering gear box (lots of play) and narrowed my rebuilder to Blue Top. My question to the members is: Should I send mine in to get rebuilt knowing my truck will be down for Xdays or should I just order one off the shelve and take the risk of the unknown history?
My thoughts on all this is that I know mine has done me well vs I will not know what I'm getting.

George, I’m not sure what blue tops turnaround is, but when I sent mine into West Texas off road from my jeep I had it back in six days I believe. They rebuilt it and ported it so I could go with hydra-assist....they sell a complete kit. I’m sure either place will test, or has tested any box they sent out. When the box on my Truck goes, I will be sending it into West Texas…

I will be ordering from BlueTop in the next couple of weeks. I plan to be charged for the core, then return the core after the BlueTop is installed. There is a 30 day return policy on the core, but if you feel sending your gear in would suit you better, give them a call. They answer the phone and will speak to you with no obligation to purchase.

Several well known and trusted FTE'rs have and do vouch for the BlueTop steering gear. Some of them I have met in person.

WTO and Red Head were at the top of my list too, but BlueTop won based on advice from their customers and people I trust. From what I understand, BlueTop was started by a lead tech that left Red Head.

I don't see the need for the ram assist, but I am not you and you can and should make that decision for yourself. BlueTop can and will install a port in the gear for you just like WTO if the ram assist is in your future. BlueTop is very reasonably priced for a top tier steering gear.

Hopefully this helps.

Thank you Sous. I think I too will be ordering one upfront and returning the core.

I ordered a Blue Top steering gear up front also for my 2001 Ex and couldn't be happier. It's super easy to send the core back and payment reimbursement was prompt.

I just drove Eric's (ArmyLifer) Excursion for about 20 miles and the BlueTop is far superior to the AutoZone gear I currently have. I am looking forward to getting a BlueTop on order next week.

Sous,

Spoke to them Wednesday. Hopefully they will have some 36 spline ready Tuesday. They are out and waiting on cores. They do have 32 spline.

Thank you Sous. I checked early this morning and did see they got them back in. I too will order one but hate the 57.00 shipping charge one way to South Florida plus another 57.00 back for the core. I know it heavy but gotta do it.

My shipping was $48 to north GA, but it is what it is. Like you, it is a hard pill to swallow, but I am tired of the 2" of play from the AutoZone gear I have been dealing with for 4 years.

Your welcome and I hope your project goes well for you.

I shipped mine back to them USPS Priority Mail and it cost me about half of what UPS would have. That was about 3 years ago before the Postal Service went to crap.

Good idea Eric! We have a USPS online account with "click-n-ship" so I can calculate the shipping by the size and weight. I will update here with what I am able to figure out. The steering gear is scheduled to be delivered to me on Friday and probably Friday or Saturday for MiamiPSD. I might be able to get it installed on Saturday or Monday based on how the other projects are going.

Is it silly I am looking forward to this like it is Christmas day...
