just bought a f350 6.9
while changing oil i noticed one of the glow plug ends was not hooked up, found out they had broke off a glow plug,
what is the simplest way to remove it so i can replace it
How much of the gp is left? Clean out around the gp and blow away any dirt from it,if your lucky just the tip is gone and the 3/8 hex is still there. It can be hard to see due to dirt. Good luck.
If thats the case you will need to carefully try to get the rest out with an easy out. If you lose it down the head it will have to be removed (the head that is). Be sure to have a real good look for the 3/8 hex,it will be hard to see due to the crud that gathers around it.
If it's broken flush with the head I wouldn't mess with it until it needs head gaskets or you just want to pull the head. It starts with seven doesn't it?
Now, mind you it's a Chevy 6.5, but other than that. One broken plug, some (not very good) mechanics, and one wrong decision made for a really bad couple weeks for this truck owner. He took his truck to a shop to check the glow plugs. They found a few burned out. One broke when they tried to pull it. Then they started trying to drill it out. They ended up getting "some of it" out. The rest fell in the cylinder. They removed the injector and thought, "if we turn it over the piece should blow out". Problem was, someone decided to use the starter to do this! After the big clunk, they ended up pulling the head. They found the glow plug buried in the piston and the cylinder split from top to bottom.
I was a person just like that, I did a FRESH head job, about 3 weeks old. And the F***ing glowplug controller stuck on and fried all of my plugs. It was a brand new controller as well.
I was so pi$$ed off that I pulled all of them and cranked until it blew out, well I was lucky because even though I put a piece of leather over the hole, it shot right thu the piece of leather. May I just say LUCKY!!!
I drilled one out and the piece that dropped in drove it self right through the piston. At least I go 151k miles out of it before that. A Jasper reman cost me $10k with a clutch, radiator and labor. After another 100k miles on the reman that truck is tired If i had to do it over I'd do the head gaskets than drill it.
