holley seems way better for offroading for several reasons. One is dedicated primary float bowl and dedicated secondary bowl. I usually lowered the float slightly in the secondaries soas tonot have flooding issues on down hill. A truckavenger holley has a check weight integrated into it that theoretically idles at any angle, without flooding. The fuel can't flood the venturi solong as the check weight is closed. Air velocity lifts the check weight and allows for normal fuel atomization. Truck avengers seem to rarely flood with proper setup. Mine only flooded if I had a bad o ring or something.
Funny not so funny side note, the Holley carb that was on my engine when i bought my truck 5 years ago was an OLD holley, the metal was the old faded "copper" looking....anyhow I wanted to have it professional rebuilt and i didnt have the guts to do it myself yet, so i sent it to a "reputable" family owned shop in NY.... I let about a month go by and called the owner and he said "oh yea we got that carb be a few more weeks" long story short he eventually stopped answering my calls and i never seen the carb again, never paid anything, but i really wanted to carb that came with the truck to get back on the truck, if i lived anywhere close i would have paid a visit......Not sure if that Holley was "special" and they wanted it or they just didnt care enough to deal with it or me
I bought a complete FE some years back that a guy had sitting in his shop. The carb that was on it turned out to be some rare one that was only made for Ford by Holley for cobra jet mustangs. I remember the carb had the original ID plate with it, I was able to match up it to some online database for authentic cobra jet parts. People needing parts for authentic builds will pay a lot of coins that type of stuff. I sold that thing for quite a bit more than I paid for the entire engine. Anyhow maybe your carb was rare and the rebuilder knew somebody who is looking for that particular model and well...made out like a bandit.
