So went for a good long off road journey in the ole truck today, the edlebrock did great until I got into some real steep hill climbs. Im guesstimating, but after about 30 degrees the fuel delivery was inconsistent and eventually stopped. I had to back down a hill, let the truck sit for a bit and then head out a different direction. Been doing some reading on off road carbs and both Holley and Edelbrock make them, but a lot recommend fitting a quadrajet, does anyone have any experience with this ? I plan on doing lots of off roading in my highboy, and now that shes running good I want to get it dialed in....
A stock Edelbrock carb is IM experienced Opinion are junk if you are off roading HARD. Yes I have tried all the web suggested tricks. You are lucky it died on a nose up, FYI they die just as bad or worse on a nose down. Short term fix is spring loaded needle seats being the cheapest and easiest. Just get them for your current carb, install, tune and go. But go carefully, because that is not the all in one fix, depending on how hard you are offroading it.
A Quadrajet has a great off roading reputation, better on the web than a stock or off road kitted Edelbrock or a Holley, you can even mount them backwards. I battled carb issues on my Bronco with a Edelbrock 4bbl before and after a spring kit. Then tried a buddies Holley 4bbl with a spring kit, still had issues, but not as bad and the Edelbrock. The best set up I ran was a stock MC 2bbl, but not enough go go go.
The web and Pirate4x4 is full of offroading carb tricks. And like I said I tried them all. Now I have a Holley Off Road carb on it, I got a heck of a deal (pretty much stole it for what I paid for it) on a almost brand new one. I got it, put it on, had my carb guru (I am NOT one) tune ck it and away I went off roading. Have not had any issue at all. They are not made for a level ground DD, so says on the web site I believe.
Thanks Rich, read a bunch of those links you sent. Get spoiled with new FI trucks in the hills, I knew it would be interesting when i actually had the truck out in the sticks, just gotta learn the tricks and get the Carb setup. Ordered the spring and seat kit for the Eddy, gonna start there and see how she does, im not getting too extreme out in the hills, but an average long hill climb has to be expected now and then.
And when it dies there goes your power steering and power BRAKES. Also check out running/using a fuel pressure regulator. I know one of the tip and tricks involved running one. And then the crossover port being plugged, setting the floats real low. But be careful because some mods make for great up and down hill driving, but NOT for normal DD driving.
If you decide to switch to a Holley or in general a good read and possible some tricks that could work on your Edelbrock? Like the home made cross over vent tube. https://classicbroncos.com/tech/offr...4-barrel-carbs
I am looking for the one saved word doc with pics of the exact mods to make to the Edelbrock. When I find it I will post it.
I had the same issues awhile back & searched quite a bit. Long term solution is EFI but wanted to get my current setup at least tolerable for wheeling until finish building new engine -

Running Edelbrock 1406/Performer intake/Summit 5200 cam/C6 auto - Stock it was almost unusable like mention above. Added "Off-road kit" & blocked crossover. Set float height (a must) running fuel pressure regulator with gauge on it. Recurved distributor at same time as had deleted all EGR crap of engine & was getting knock. After setting timing & mixture, etc. it's worlds better. Still have issues in extreme situations but it's live able for now. Dropping fuel pressure if I know I'm gonna be pushing it helps. I'm know expert on auto carbs but do a ton of MX bike tuning with carbs & such so am enjoying learning this truck stuff as frustrating as it can be at times..........
Thanks for the input fellas, how do the mods to the Eddy affect daily cruising ? Guess im asking for the best of both worlds, but something in between would be the ticket. Love the idea of that Holley TA, that dude is expensive.

Two seperate carbs each set up for their task. I did that when I was towing in the Mtns and then at sea level. Like anything it depends on how much you're going to use it dictates whether the additional cost is justified.
I'm with Gashog390 on this one. Have had several Heeps in my life, and the hands down winner was the 2100/2150 carb for the win. Angles AND daily driving... it just plain worked, provided it had the essential components inside.
Do most even have enough go go go to warrant a 4bl
If you look at the numbers on the pre emissions FE motors and those of the post emissions FE motors that is certainly a valid question if no efforts have been made to return the motor to a pre emissions state however most here have or are on their way to accomplish that so the 4 barrel intake is a step towards that and was quite prevalent in the FE pre emission motors. One square bore 4 barrel carb that hasn't been discussed yet if you're on a budget is the motocraft/holley 4180 they were used in everything from mustangs to motor homes and 351"s to 460's and most every holley part available will fit. The most attractive part about them is they can be made to adjust in all 4 corners. A used rebuildable can be had for $50-$100 and they're easy to find and parts are available. So for a 600 cfm holley I've had great luck with them just alter them to fit whatever your driving itch requires. It's a hands on carb so if that's not you then go get your new $700 version that you're still going to have to do the work on to dial it in any ways
Thanks for the suggestions, the more I read about this topic the more I realize the carb is going to have to be tweaked and tuned regardless, and some of the more affordable options seem fun at this point, I have a basic holley sitting on a bench and the eddy on the engine, so maybe the answer for me is to keep the Eddy cruiser friendly and make the Holley into the offroad model, I dig the 2 barrel Motorcraft also and was reading a bunch on that setup, but then looking at an adapter plate on the intake, just to bring it back were it was when it was made
