Question Dash Cam Upfitter Switches

I bought a hardwire kit from
Amazon Amazon
and are wondering how one would go about wiring this up to use the upfitter switches and pass through wires? Do you cut the wire and have a pass through for the positive and another for the ground?

Why wouldn’t you just wire it per the instructions? Tap an aux power fuse in the passenger kick panel for normal operation and an always hot fuse for the optional bump/motion mode. Done and you don’t waste an upfitter.

If you wanted it on a switch for some reason, I’d still not use an upfitter. That requires you to run wiring out your firewall, which is a pain no matter how you slice it. If you must have it on a switch, I’d mount something under my dash, up near the steering column. That way, you could switch on the power, but you don’t have to mess with breaching the firewall.

You take an upfitter wire from under the hood and splice it to one of the pass-through wires. Then inside the cab you run a wire from the pass-through to your cam. The ground just has to be landed under a bolt somewhere on the metal of the truck. Some people like to use an existing ground found under the trim by the passenger side floorboard fuse panel.

I was debating that but I figured I didn't want the battery constantly drained even though I know its a minute amount I thought I'd rather not especially for a diesel and cold winters. Plus I thought I have the switches and nothing on them so might as well use them. Thanks though for the advice

I am new to this but wanting to learn and not sure if I am doing this right, that is what I thought I was doing, I took that hookup kit I bought and connected the positive wire to the upfitter switch wire and then the black to an existing ground on the frame but them when I stretched it out across my truck I stripped the black part of the wire thinking I was going to splice it to my pass through wire and then take the other part I cut that has the dash cam plug and splice it on the inside through the passthrough wire. But when I stripped the black part of the wiring there was a smaller red and black wire in it. Not sure how to wire then

If it was a pre-made cable for the camera, just use the pre-made connector section inside the cab. Red gets extended to the pass through wire and black gets extended to body ground. Under the hood you can either run a single hot wire to your pass through or you can utilize the pre-made cable, just don't worry about hooking up the black under the hood.

I wanted the parking protection on my truck. I wired the cam right to the fuse box, parking mode is hot all the time. Don't drive the truck much and it has sat over two weeks with no issues yet.

Be very careful on the voltage on some dash cams. Mine is something like 5.5 DC volts. I wired my upfitter switches to cigarette type sockets behind the glovebox, and ran the wires from my dash cam, Furion rear trailer cam, and CB to those sockets, since they all came with cigarette male sockets. My dash cam socket must have a built in voltage reducer.

Thanks, I am going to run a separate hot wire to the pass through wire from the aux switch and then hook the hardwire kit up to there and grounding it inside the cab along the frame.
Thanks all for the input
