Does anyone know what I can do to fix my shifting linkage? I have a 78 f150 auto that shifts backward and skips a gear every time I shift it. I recently purchased it, the dude I bought it from had a pipe clamped to the lever to shift it and I'm trying to correct it.
Well with that cut and welded sign on the one lever, you definitely have some mod work there. With modified shift rods no telling what is causing the issue. I would try to get the actual linkage and get it set back up correctly.
So based on those diagrams you posted, I need to look for part "7A024", right? Where would I find that part, because I've looked online, CL, FB Marketplace, and a ton of salvage yards for that one piece and I can't seem to find it anywhere.
Yes #7A024 looks to be cut/welded modded. But like you said in your visitor message to me, you need to confirm you have a truck C-6. Comparing the Transmission Manual Lever (part # 7A256 in the diagrams), yours tooks to be oriented differently. Yours is facing down versu facing up?
Have you joined your FTE state chapter yet and ask for some in state help locating parts? https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...d-morning.html
I do have a C6. But is a truck C6 different from a car C6? Because remember my shifting is backwards, so I'm not sure if that's the missing parts fault or the transmission fault.
Ok so C-6 got it, as far a a difference in a truck versus a car trans? I have no experience with that. Maybe it is a car trans and it does shift backwards and that is why the rod was cut and welded? But you would think that more than a cut/weld of a rod would be needed to 180* the linkage operation? So when you put it in Park on the steering column it (the trans) is actually in L1. And L1 on the column is actually Park on the trans? That is weird.
I’ve not heard of difference between a truck and car c6. If you are in Kansas, what area are you from? I might be able to give you several salvage yard suggestions depending on your location.
So I left out the "f" in "shift" above, so that's supposed to say shift.
And also, for the part "7A256" you said was flipped upsidedown, how do I turn that back around? Should I try and turn it 180* and if so how do I do it? How does that come loose?
I think there is a small salvage yard at Axtell KS that has old Ford trucks. I don’t know the name of it though. There is also one in Washington KS with a bunch of older cars and trucks.
Delphos also has a small yard with old cars and trucks. I can’t remember his name.
I doubt if any of these have websites and you would have to try to google for names and phone numbers.
I was needing a driver's door window for my 68' mustang so I checked on https://www.car-part.com/ and found one in KC. The interface is dated and sometimes hard to navigate, but it checks a ton of yards nationwide and you can cut the radius down to nearby yards to narrow your search.

Comparing the way the 7A256 is in the diagrams and looking at your, yours looks to be installed wrong. But that could be a truck trans versus a car trans set up. And that is why you have the cut welded lever? I do not know how to take it off. I'd have to look at it and do more research, if I was going to do it. If you grab the lever and move it does it at least go thru the 1,2,D,N,R,P range? Be careful under there, make sure to chalk the wheels, truck could roll when you pull it out of park. Trans guru chime in time.
