Automatic Transmission Service

My trusty F250's transmission burnt up on the way home a couple years ago and the truck had to be sold to a parts outfit. I have a 95 and a 97 F150 and wonder about recommended transmission service to avoid that problem.

Advice? Thanks.

I have two 1994 F150 with E4OD, and both have 300, 000 Kms.
If your F250 was older than 94, that was probably most of the problem.
The 95 and newer have better upgraded parts.
Do regular oil changes, and use the recommended oil.
Don't do burnouts in drive.
Turn off overdrive when necessary.
Don't overload the truck, and do 100mph up a hill.
Get an auxiliary transmission cooler, if your trucks have tow package they should already have them.

I don't think there is anything to service, other than make sure that the oil is clean and can flow.

The F250 was a 96 I think. So it'd be a good idea to drain and renew the transmission fluid? Any thoughts on additives, I recall Seafoam having a transmission product.

Thanks!

Yes, you are supposed to change the transmission fluid as part of regular maintenance. I would not recommend adding anything to the fluid. This thread has how to do it as recommended by one of its engineers.

Thanks, read through it. It is confusing though about whether to change the filter, and whether to get all the fluid out or just 5 quarts.

I’ve never been a fan of additives, just masks a real problem in my opinion.
drain torque converter as well.
get a Ford motor craft filter.
they hold 16 litres.
do not blow air through trans lines, rad or cooler, as that can force lodge debris and plug.

i change fluid and filter every 30,000 to 35,000 miles.
the 79 F350 has 183,000 miles on it.
my 88 has 495,000 miles on it.
the 94 van had 375,000 miles on it when it was wrecked.
the 02 pickup has 194,000 miles on it.
the 04 F350 i parted out after it got crushed by a tree had 323,000 miles on it.
all have the original transmissions in them, and never had anything done besides fluid/filter service every 30-35k miles. .

I'll add the Lucas Automatic Transmission snake oil to a rig I get, if the transmission is already abused when I get it, it honestly seems to help if you've got a transmission slipping. Otherwise, I don't bother, just do the filter and fluid every 35k miles or so.

I'm not a fan of changing the filter. It's not fine enough that it can clog unless the trans totally self destructs.

The procedure has several steps where each time it pumps out around 5-6 quarts. Do that three times and you should have replaced about 18 quarts.

Very interesting. This might help prolong the life of my little brother's C6..... Now, as Mark mentioned if the filter doesn't need to be changed every time, would it be prudent to put a drain plug in the trans pan so it can be easily drained and refilled at Tom's recommended service interval? Rather than removing the pan each time?

You can if you want. I have been told many times changing the filter every time the is a waste of money, but I did it anyway.
the past few years with the newer trucks I have switched to filter every other fluid change.

The filter in the newer trucks (2008 and newer) is a good filter. It needs to be changed at a regular interval as spelled out in the manual.

I recently had to replace the broken shift tube and ever since I can't get into Park. With warmer weather coming I'd like to crawl under there and see if I can adjust the cable on the Park/Neutral switch. Advice?

To clarify is the adjustment performed under the truck or at the end of the shift rod under the dash?
