I have a '94 F150 with 4.9l with a 75 amp 2 plug alternator. I hate the fact that when I drive at night and stop at a red light, my dash gage shows the battery discharging instead of charging. I looked up the '95 4.9 and found that they have a base model 95 amp alternator but with different wiring.
Has anyone ever upgraded their 75 amp to a 95 amp and how you do it? Any con for doing this or recommedations?
Hey 94,
Since you have a serpentine belt, you shouldn't have any problems upgrading the alternator.
On my '85, I upgraded the 1G alternator (60 amp) to a 3G (120 amp). It took a little more work since I had to get it set up with 2 v-belts. But the serpentine will have plenty of grip for up to a 150 - 200 amp.
If you're going to go through the work of installing a bigger alternator and upgraded wiring, I'd go with one of the higher amp setups. That much work for 20 more amps isn't worth the effort.
I don't know the ins and outs of upgrading the wiring on your 93 since it's totally different than my '85 was, but you can find a good amount of information here:
Just note that they only mention the 302 and 351 since the Bronco didn't come with the 300 after 92 like the trucks did, but the information still applies.
Hey Abandoned,
What kind of wiring upgrade would I need for the 130 amp? I and read in some spots that the existing grade wires were able to handle it, but I have been seeing that some have put in an inline fuse? Is there somewhere that I can order the gray wire connector the goes to the 3G amps? Does anyone already have a wiring harness that has the necessary 3G hookups?
I decided to stay with doing the 95 amp because I didn't need all the extra stuff.. I am glad I did too, turned out that my existing wires were still pretty good. I took them out, inspected them, changed the ends to fit the new 3G connections, and re-wrapped them. I am glad that I read about some of the mounting screws being different. I tried out the screws before putting it in and they were right.. same thing! I was able to find a screw to match before I was deep into it.. Biggest advice I can give to the next guy.. try out your screws before mounting it in.. Before and after..
Before Double wires..
Another angle..
