Where view mirror with backup camera view

Has anyone install one of these rear view mirrors with the backup camera view in it? I originally thought these Displays were built into the actual mirror but now that I am looking at them online it looks like most or all of them actually clip on over the existing rearview mirror. Does anyone know anything about these displays? I have a 79F250 and need a backup camera and don't really want a big head unit display in my - so was considering the rear view mirror option

There are many off brand mirrors like this
Amazon Amazon

Checking aliexpress will show more as well.

A Gentex (OEM manufacturer) will cost 4 times that.

I'm the same way. Would prefer not to have another screen to look at.
I actually bought one from Costco a few months ago to check out when it was on sale. Looked like a good quality piece (or decent at least) but it came with a large display screen.
While I did connect it to the battery to see how it looked, I was never going to use it because not only was the screen too awkward by half for any of the vehicles I wanted to try it in, but the license plate frame camera was so bulky it literally could not be bolted up to my '79, my '68, or even my '04 Buick!
So it was basically a non-starter.

Would like to hear what other's experiences are with the ones they've tried.

Paul

They sell ones where the camera lens (screen) built into the rear view mirror.

I’ve got one on my truck. Camera mounted below the bottom of tailgate and top of bumper. Left side of rear view mirror switches to screen. Hooks up to your reverse lights obviously. Very easy to wire and it is pretty cool. GF bought it for me kinda as a gag gift but it is useful. Mines cheap, probably $70-80 I’m sure.

Well it’s not perfect. Mine doesn’t get bright enough so if you’re facing the sun you might not be able to see it and the screen doesn’t auto brightness at all meaning in the morning I might turn it up real high then at night I have to click it down again. Most of the time mine stays low. With my big mirrors and how easy our trucks are to back up during the day in 99% of situations it’s extra having the camera. But there have been plenty of times at night or just in tight situations where it comes in handy. With it mounted under the tailgate, my big mirrors, my little compound mirrors on the big mirrors, and the rear view mirror, I can see waaay down both sides of the truck and what’s immediately behind me. Also makes booking a trailer up pretty easy. I wouldn’t buy one for myself, I just don’t have that much of a need and I like things factory. But it is pretty cool and does come in handy. My GF was blown away the first time she was in the truck when I put it in reverse. But if you’re wanting to use one frequently don’t scrape the barrel.

I wonder why automakers haven't already replaced all of the glass mirrors with digital cameras. There might be a legal barrier or it may be that the technology isn't that foolproof yet. We've all learned how to shift our attention to the appropriate mirror and even those little convex sub-mirrors. The human factor could be the toughest nut to crack.
Still, I think it would be an aerodynamic improvement that would conserve fuel and it might even be safer, especially for towing.

No I mean the camera itself is still on the back of the truck (bumper or below tailgate) and the regular (new version) rear view mirror has the pop up screen (built in) when you put it in reverse. Look for a camera with a wide angle 'fish eye" lens. A 120* to 180* FOV. 180* being the best.

Augmented reality (AR) and mixed reality (MR) devices may provide viable alternatives in the near future.
Something I read about this AM: https://www.cultofmac.com/737770/app...re-looking-at/
An extreme version of this idea would have us being able to look at an icon in the heads up display (HUD) causing a rear view image to appear that renders everything on the vehicle behind you, including a big enclosed trailer, transparent or as a wire frame. Of course this would require multiple cameras.
Further on out, we might have a drone following us that renders a 360º birds eye view.
It will give us something to do and worry about while our vehicle is driving itself. 8-)
