Truck had no pedal response while leaving an intersection just idle ( fl snow bird and spring break traffic fun fun fun ) limped thru and was able to get to the median. Code was for accelerator position sensor. Wiggled connector and was able to get signal back. I remember reading somewhere in a thread about replacing just the sensor but there were issues of alignment. So recommended to replace whole assembly or just sensor? Ford part # F81Z 9F836 AA is the assembly but the sensor is only aftermarket.
Somebody did have this issue recently...engine would idle fine but no response from accelerator when pressed. He tried aftermarket replacements from Rock Auto but didn't have any luck fixing it until he used the OEM Motorcraft unit. Fairly expensive part IIRC.
LOL you recall correctly ....over 400 thru RR, ( ford =823.84 ) local shop will match price so just waiting on delivery. The thread that was posted in I think was an "ongoing with my truck" thread and doesn't seem to want to be found using the search.
I have to ask, did you check for a short in your over drive harness? My truck did the same thing would idle but no pedal, harness was shorting out on the knuckle of my gear shift. Might be worth a check
will open up tomorrow and take a look. Sensor is suspect because a crack in the "body" is seen which I think has let the guts get sloppy / contaminated. Cleaned contacts and blew out sensor, responding normal at this time but not worth risk of crossing intersections only to be back at idle.
First question is , is it an adjustable height assembly or a static one ? You cannot replace the switch separately on an adjustable one. it's all one piece. and they are 700.00 bones for the Ford model. The static ones are much cheaper, but I would still buy OE. Be Warned!
I've got the Extra stupid Merit Badge on this subject......
I'm not sure what the differences are between the years, but mine being an E99 with the separate idle validation switch needed nothing than the splined arm in the assembly to be repositioned. That allows for the common TPS replacement to be used. That thread should have made it to the tech folder.
I still can't understand why the throttle response is so laggy on mine. I've gotten used to it but it's noticably sluggish trying to rev-match a downshift with a manual trans.
I replaced mine on my 03 truck using the dorman part. It was like 99$ 3 yrs ago. It is still in that truck and working. When mine was failing i had dead spots in the accelerator and my mpg suffered 2ish mpg. Using the cruise crontrol eliminates the tps and that was the ahha moment for me.
I had researched it quite a bit. Some earlier models you can just replace the sensor or electronics itself without having to replace the pedal. My 03 looked identical to an 03 part i found in a 6leaker. But it didnt work at all. So at that point i rolled the dice on the dorman.
