Horn Problems

Hello everyone im having a issue with my horn on my 1977 Ford F-250 so I have power and a good ground to the actual horn and I have power to the horn from the steering column so my problem is where the steering wheel mounts. so when I put my test light on the contact above my finger the horn goes off no problem but when the steering wheel is on and the horn buttom is on the horn only works in certain areas also the horn button Is brand new Thank you

Perhaps not enough pressure on the spring that makes the contact. You may be able to stretch it a bit. I would also use some light sandpaper on the metal ring.

You can close the gap between the column and the steering wheel by loosening the two bolts that hold the column to the dash and also by loosening the ring around the column where it enters the engine compartment. Check out my thread from a few days ago on my troubleshooting for a pic of a work horn contact vs a NOS non-worn one. You may have a brush that is worn down quite a bit. The light sanding is also a good tip.

That is what I ended up doing only because my right (upper) turn signal cancelling cam was broken. The turn signal switch, hazard switch and horn brush is all one piece. I'd try adjusting the steering wheel gap before going the route of a new switch assembly. Most of the NOS one's are close to $100 when you can find them. Best price I see on Ebay right now is $88 including shipping for a NOS D3TZ-13341-B. The Dennis Carpenter repro is available for $39.95 plus tax and shipping.

The ring you see around the middle is the contact point. You can see where his is only touching at a certain point (based on how the wear looks from here anyway) and that maybe the ring itself is offset so it's in effect "wobbling" while the wheel goes around in a circle.

That is the cancelling cam actuator. Or the cam lobes, or release levers or whatever. Not sure exactly the name, but they cancel the turn signals when they knock into the arms on what is usually called the "cancelling cam" you can see there on the left side of his first pic.
Those arms are the part that usually breaks (especially in cold weather!) when the switches get old and you lose your cancelling function.
