The quarter car wash is your friend. Spray the head down with Simple Green or your favorite degreaser and run some bottle brushes through all the openings and pressure wash it.
Blow it dry ASAP and spray it down with WD-40 to retard corrosion and reassemble.

Well, finally got the old girl back on the road today. She needs a little tuning...running rich at idle. But off idle she's smooth, and with the new exhaust, she's got a little growl!
