i have an 87' ranger, 2.9L, 6 cylinder, electronic fuel injection, 5-speed manual transmission, two-wheel drive.
it had failed the mass emissions test with a hydrocarbon reading of 5.60 gpm.
since then i have changed the oxygen sensor which brought the reading down to 4.25, but the limit is 3.20.
what else can i change on the truck to bring the hydrocarbon reading down?
none of the emissions controls systems have been changed on the truck (other than the oxygen sensor) due to the fact that i bought it used last febuary.
Welcome to FTE 1987rangerpu,

welcome to the FTE... what i always do is change my oil and filter pcv valve air filter and the spark plugs. did you check your thermostat and see if its working ok? sometimes they fail with the emissions too by over heating the engine. test your catalytic converter to see if its plugged at the shop ..hope this will help
I'm up in Canada and we have to do our emissions every other year. I just paseed and I bought the truck for 100 bucks. Mind you I put approx. 600 into it including a new converter. Along with what Black Wolf said, if you think you need a new converter put one on and try the night before the test put high octane gas as well. Also make sure timing is right on the money. My friend is a mechanic, he said FORDS are pretty good for emission tests. Let me know what happens.
Hi ya group,
Just replaced my thermostat because I pulled a code 21 (ECT) on my EEC- IV / PCM. Well...to make this short, I had a rusted hose clamp that busted and this stopped the engine from getting up to operating temp!
Summary: Don't always go for the most expensive problem! This one was worth 50 cents and 5 min in time!
As for emissions, I'm looking forward to it! I have 8 plugs in my 2.3L and I'm curious to see the readings; being the new owner and all!
