Explorer 5 speed in Ranger?

I have a customer with a 93 Ranger 4x4,2.9 liter w/ 5 speed manual transmission that is trashed.I am currently stripping a 94 Explorer 4x4 w/ 4.0 liter and manual 5 speed.I've heard various opinions about whether I can put the Explorer tranny in the Ranger.
#1-The local junkyard says the Hollander interchange says no.
#2-A local tranny rebuilder says yes, just 2nd and 3rd gear ratios are different between the two trannys.
I do know that the bellhousing patterns are the same, already checked that out.Input spline size is identical but Ranger used 8 and 7/8" d. disc while explorer uses 10".Shouldn't be problem.
However,Ranger uses 3/4" clutch master and 1 and 1/32" slave while Explorer uses 5/8" and 1.875.
Anybody actually done this?
