I debated between the B&W and the Weigh-Safe. I really liked the B&Ws adjust-ability and solid looks but it appeared that the adjusting pins could be stolen even if you had a locking receiver pin holding the receiver in place. Also the B&W does not have a stainless steel ball. So, I chose the Weigh-Safe as the pin to change the stainless steel ***** is hidden on the inside and there is a locking pin to adjust for height. You have to remove height adjusting pin and slide the unit off the rest of the receiver to change the ball size. Yes, they are pretty but they will not stay that way if you leave them in the receiver year round. Plus you get the tongue scale and mine is still working after 5 years.
Curt does not make any junk either, lots of good options there.
Alright, so I went with the Curt adjustable. Funny story is I was going to order it off etrailer at $154 and did more looking. UHaul sells the same rebranded hitch for $139.99, and shockingly enough my local UHaul store had one in stock.
Upon getting it home however comparing it to my old receiver I am only going to have one more notch to lower which is 1”. Now I normally only pull my cargo trailer but do on occasion pull others. I am kinda torn, due to the reason for upgrading is more appropriate weight capacity however the current hitch I have has more adjustment. So in my head I love the price of this and like the build and everything but should I get something that as more adjustments? I mean it will be over double the price but I am torn. Or just roll with it and see down the road if I need something different.
Who would have thought there would be this many options for a hitch!!!
Also, is your truck lifted or your cargo trailer tongue unusually low?
On my smaller trailers I've sometimes raised the coupler for this reason. Takes some fabrication ability but worth it for me
My truck isn’t lifted. I do have airbags in the rear but 90% of the time they only run at the min 10 psi. I just don’t know if I am over thinking it or what. But I don’t want to throw money at this one and wish later I would have done differently.
Well I took back the Curt hitch due to it not having enough adjustment. I have done more exploring since I first posted. I was set on a weigh safe 180 that is rated for 12,500 pounds which is plenty. However when I went to my local hitch shop I saw the B&W Tow and Stow which I do really like also. However being that my trucks hitch is only 2” their receiver is only rated for 10,000 pounds.
I know that the weighsafe is over kill for my setup I am having a hard time to purchase one that is more expensive and costs more.
Well I am sure everybody thinks I am crazy at this point. However this is the sum of the days events.
Went to my local hitch shop. Talk about towing overload!!!! They have everything and 5 kinds of each one. I looked at the B&W tow and stow hitch, really liked it. Like the ease of switching the ball, and that I could flip it around and not worry about taking out my shins when walking around the back of the truck. Didn’t like the price. A full time hauler waiting for his truck to be done starting a conversation with me and stated it was the same hitch that he runs and he loves his. He even was blown over last year in a wind storm and the only damage was a bent pin. Thought that was good strength testimony. Plus I liked the fact that it was an in between size for the drop/raise. The Weigh-safe was at 6” or 8” and the B&W was 7”. 6” wasn’t enough and 8” was too much. It was $257.
next I looked at the Weigh-safe 180 hitch. Really like the quality of it, locking pins worked nicely and looks good also. Spent about 45 min debating between the two and the local guy behind the counter was very patient and informative so I appreciated that. The Weigh-Safe was $229 with the stainless steel ball. I was kinda worried about the two different metals being so close together as I have read some have issues with that and I do live in the rust belt where water and salt is a regular 3-4 months out of the year.
Ended up going with the Weigh-safe 6” drop 180. Bought a matched keyed hitch lock and went on my way. Was excited about getting something rated for what I was pulling and having a comfort level there.
Got it home and started messing around with it and getting it set up for my trailer. Then I noticed that once it was all set up for the right height I only had 1” left to drop and the hitch was maxed out. Wasn’t thrilled about that. I normally only pull my trailer however I do on occasion have pulled a UHaul, my dads cargo trailer and my dads dump trailer and do occasionally rent tools from the rental yard. So I figured if I was going to spend this much money I really would have liked a more versatile hitch. So I planned on going back and exchanging it for the 8” drop Weigh-safe.
Back to the store I went. Walked in with my mind set and ended up getting the B&W tow and stow 7” drop hitch 🤣. Guy was super cool and got me all exchanged out. Got it home and greased it up and installed. Very nice and adjusted super easy. So I hope it is worth the extra $28 bucks and is the last hitch I buy.
