I know this is a matter of opinion however I know there are a ton of guys who tow on here and there are a ton of options out there. Which one float to the top of you know what I mean?
I have been pulling my construction cargo trailer with a steel Reese adjustable hitch for quite a few years now. This sounds terrible but I just noticed that it is only rated for 5,000 lbs. Houston we have a problem. I am not sure my exact trailer weight I need to get it weighed, try and work on that today. I am guessing in the 7-9 K range. So I need a beefier receiver.
My hitch is a Curt class IV hitch rated for 10K and 12K with weight distribution.
So I have been looking at a couple different receivers.
1. Weigh-Safe 180 was first on my list but with the measurements and the 11” clearance they say we would need only allows me to get a 6” drop and my current receiver is already at 5 1/2” so I would like to get a 8” drop for little more flexibility if possible for the money. But still an option. This ones at $229
2. Weigh-Safe single ball drop hitch. Really don’t need the scale and have heard they are warrantied for life but have read quite a few go bad after a couple years. I guess not a huge deal. It will give me more clearance then the 180 above. This ones is $329
3. B&W adjustable receiver. Looks nice a beefy but I don’t like how many pins it has and don’t really want a hitch that is super heavy and I do take it out when not in use. But looks to be a very nice product. Most expensive at around $375.
I get it. The Weigh Safe aluminum one is about $50 more. I am more curious as to how much drop/raise I can get out of the Curt one compared to the one I have. I was hoping it would be prime and I could return it if needed but it’s not. I am still thinking. Thank you for the suggestion. I do like the simplicity of it.
I was looking at the Gen Y hitch also. Just seems bulky and wish it had more fine tuning of the up and down measurements. 2 1/2” at a time is a lot. I do like the step that you can get to go in there though. An interesting option.
If you can, can you measure from the ground to the bottom of the hitch and let me know what that is. I might give them a call tomorrow. They are made about 20 mins away from me.
Been running the curt 45900 for about 10 years. Has a 14k lbs rating. Excellent hitch. I also have the curt 45902 which has a 20k lbs rating for anyone who tows heavy this is also a great hitch. They are both heavy hitches though.
Granted I didn't click on the OP's other contenders but I really like that the Curt has the 2" and 2-5/16 as those are the only sizes I acknowledge to exist. I refuse to own anything with 1-7/8, its just stupid and unnecessary. I bought a little trailer at TSC and Day 1 cut the 1-7/8 coupler off and welded on 2". If anyone ever needs me to pull something 1-7/8, sorry, I refuse to own a ball in that size.
Seems to be overwhelming toward the Curt. I like the style and found out you can put a step in it also which is nice. I am leaning that way for sure. I really wanted to go with the weigh safe 180 but don’t want to buy a hitch that screams steal me.

I mean you can always do a locking pin which I do anyway because I had a solid forged stolen once and it pissed me off. It's your $, get what you want
Another thing to just consider is that people like to think they're tough leaving the draw bar in the receiver ("Just try hitting this, Prius!") but it GREATLY increases the chances of frame damage and thus totalling the vehicle if rear ended because the draw bar (unless a straight zero-drop) only serves to afford a LEVER to push the rear of the hitch down and the FRONT of the hitch UP on the framerails.
I too run the Curt hitches (had a 2" one and get a 2.5" one later, Moved the 2" one to my other truck. got bumped at a stop light and pushed the adapter that was stuck in the receiver in farther, had to cut it out). Yes, They're only 2 and 2-5/16, and they do have a "ball tongue", for a lack of actually knowing what it's called, you can put a 1-7/8 on but I'm unaware of being able to get it or replacement heads by them sleves. and I don't know about weight dist hitches for them, I don't have one. I think the adjustment is every inch.
