I am getting ready to pull the engine out of the 1987 F-150 auto 4x4 to rebuild the heads and replace the flywheel. I have worked on many cars and trucks before but never pulled the engine off of a 4x4 auto transmission . Can I leave the transmission attached to the mount or do I have to free it from the mount? I see the driveshaft going to the front transfer case. Do I have to remove the driveshaft to disengage the motor from the tranny? Do I need to support the tranny other than it being on the tranny crossmember?
Alternatively, do you think it would save time and work to simply remove the heads and transmission rather than taking out the engine to do the work? Has anyone done this?
I am getting great tips form you all for my project. Thanks for your help.
There is no need to remove the engine to remove the heads. Were you removing it to replace the pan gasket and/ or rear main seal and then clean/ paint the engine?
You aren’t going to replace the flywheel since only manual transmissions use one of those. Automatic transmissions use a flex plate. Why do you need to replace it?
Two or four wheel drive is not relevant when removing the engine. You would only need to remove the front driveshaft if it is in the way of accessing some of the engine bolts. Yes you need to support the front of the transmission.
For my part, It's easiest to pull the front clip off the truck, and then swing the engine and transmission out as a unit. But that's just how I do it, it's completely *possible* to do what you want, leaving the short block and transmission in the truck.

I need to resurface the heads due to severe overheat of engine and the teeth on the flex plate were damaged when the prior owner put in the wrong starter. I am debating whether it is easier to remove the engine to do both or is it better to just remove the heads and remove the transmission. I will be working with the truck on the ground as I do not have a lift. I just never removed a transmission form a 4x4 truck.
There isn’t anything special about it being 4wd verses 2wd. One more driveshaft to remove and transfer case to unbolt. That’s about it. You’re probably better off pulling the engine and doing the heads on a stand.
