Not sure of any obstacles. I left the t-case attached when I replaced my torque converter so it wasn't balanced well. Since all I had to do was side it back far enough to swap t-c. Little harder to realign. But, to remove to rebuild, I can't think of any. I know someone will chime in if they can think any.
1. For a R&R, it is better to remove the transfer case (if 4wd) first. Makes the tranny easier to handle.
2. Place a block to hold the engine from tipping when the tranny is removed. The engine mounts are not centered for the weight.
3. Make sure that you have the truck blocked up high enough that you can get the tranny out from under it while still on the jack. Much easier than manhandling it off the jack and accross the floor!
4. Really long 1/2" drive extensions, wobbly sockets, and air wrenches make the job much easier.
5. The bigger the tranny jack, the better. Especially for a ZF-6. Those things are HEAVY!
6. For the manual tranny, you have to take the access plate off the floorboard to remove the gearshift anyway, so you get at the top two bell housing bolts from there. You can get at these on an automatic with long extensions and wobblys, so you don't have to pull up the carpet.
7. Don't forget to remove all the wiring harness connectors and other linkages.
8. As a general rule, if something else is in your way, remove it to make access easier.
