If the Xfer case exploded it would drop the driveshaft and pole-vault the truck. If the driveshaft droped it would do the same acrobatics but the Xfer case would be intact (maybe cracked from impact).
You guys are seriously lucky. Is the rear drive shaft still hooked up? I can't tell from the pictures. Looking at the pics, I'd say the front drive shaft's front u-joint broke, dropped the shaft and you pole-vaulted on it which also shattered the transfer case. If the case shattered like that, the front wheels can't lock up. The front output is totally gone, no connection to the front axle at all. If the u-joints hadn't been changed, they were at least 4 years old. anyway, I don't think the transfer case caused the problem, It looks like it was a victim of whatever else happened. I agree with 92f15016, locking the front tires would not cause it to flip like that. The marks on the road would show.
Hjudge 49 ,look at the pic's again !
the front drive line is still connected to the front diff and still going in the right direction towards the transfercase up over the crossmember..
The front output shaft of the transfercase and shift motor are gone !
Will wait for Mandy to tell us if the rear drive line is still intact.
the rear shaft is still in the truck and the u-joint didn't brake. the shaft came unconnected from the transfer case but it never touched the road.
We won't know what really happened untill the investigation is over. Know telling how long that will take . .
Mandy
the insurance company is doing the investigation. I think we will talk to a lawyer and get our own investigator. We haven't talk muck about Ford . . we just want another truck. I have a feeling this is going to be a big mess. The insurance company is dragging it out. We wrecked 10/21/03 and the insurance company has only looked at the truck once and said that they have to send a investigator to look at the truck and it hasn't happened yet. We have never had this happen to us before and are kind of clueless as to what we should do.
Mandy, you kids really need to talk to a good lawyer. (I am one so I know) With all the mods on your truck, the dealer will probably give you a really hard time. I am assuming the truck is out of warranty, and Ford might make nice-nice with you to avoid bad publicity, but I can hear them now. "If the truck was stock, this would never have happened, etc," The lawyer will know an investigator who can look into the cause for you. Unfortunately, I don't know any lawyers in Louisiana any more, but ask around and don't go to the ones who advertise a lot, they are just interested in getting a percentage of your insurance money. Good luck.
Turn of events - the insurance company who kept putting us off and who said they wanted to investigate everything all of a sudden changed their minds and gave us a total for the truck (which was more than what we paid for the truck) They are even going to pay for the supercharge and everything else that is on the truck if we can show reciepts. I think it is a little weird that they changed their minds all of a sudden and ar going to give us so much.
I talked to a lawyer and they told me that we can't hold Ford liable because we were not hurt even though we believe it was a defect with the transfer case. We can only be rewarded damages for the truck since we were not hurt and the insurance company is paying that. I am just glad that everything is almost over and we can get another truck. We started looking on autotrader.com for another F-250 so hopefully in a few weeks we will have another one. I am nervous about getting another Ford but I just loved our truck - what are the chances that will happen again. . (knock on wood)
Very good news. Sounds like the insurance company decided that they needed to settle to avoid litigation. I've never heard of anything like that ever happening before, so you should be okay.
