Any help is appreciated. Ive just read so much I think ive confused myself.
For about $500 more than a generic flat tappet cam you can get a custom grind roller to your specific engine build and vehicle. not only will you get the improved performance of the roller you can't get in flat tappet ramps but you'll miss out on the cam break in drama . unless you like the suspense or rolling the dice.
I use Brent Lykins he is a ford guru and does a great job but I am sure there are others as well. he can get you a custom grind flat tappet too but I don't know why anyone would.
I ran a Comp 260H cam a few years ago. 5k miles after the break in I decided to change the oil and ran straight Castrol oil with no zinc additive. After about 200 to 300 miles, I wiped a lobe. Now, the 260H cam was great from idle to about 4k rpm and it had a very light lope to it. I loved it but I wanted more. Compare it to an RV cam and you will see there are the same.

The comp 268 is a great all around cam.. buddy had one in is truck for a lot of years and was very happy with it..
Use diesel rated oil, even now, Chevron delo for example has around 1100ppm of zinc in it..its a great cheaper alternative to higher end oils.. but given the budget allows, no question, roller cam..
I second contacting Brent Lykins (brent@lykinsmotorsports.com) for a custom ground cam. If nothing else you will get a straight answer from someone who knows what he is talking about.
The diesel oils like Motorcraft do have around 1000 ppm zinc but Valvoline VR1 has 1300. while 1000 should be enough 1300 is better. what's another $10 an oil change for a little more protection.
The problem is you can do everything right and still eat a flat tappet cam . I'm done with that game .
That and a lot of other things. that's why custom grinds make so much sense.
The debate between the 258H, 260H , 270H and so forth is in the past. now it's I want a cam for my engine build and specific vehicle for my elevation and intended use . I just feel stupid for being so late in discovering it.
I have a 262 duration in a 408W for a 76 Bronco. Even it takes some RPMs to hit a power band so unless you have some upgraded heads, intake, and exhaust you can actually start ruining performance by using too big of a cam. I can only encourage you to read up on lobe separation angle and try a custom cam. A tighter lobe separation angle is shown to boost torque across the entire RPM band (and also get a more aggressive sound due to more overlap). If I had to do it all over again I would have got the 262 lobes ground on a 105 degree lobe separation angle and give it a go.
