I’m still waiting to hear from the shop regarding my 6.0. Hopefully it is only the oil cooler and water pump, but we shall see.
Still no target date for getting back into the office and no clue when I will be eligible for the vaccine. At least I’m still working, so thankful for small favors.
So many ways to be eligible. And they don't verify. It's a matter of what you tell them. And there's no way for them to conduct background investigations into every claim of eligibility.
When I went, it was simply a verbal screening to determine eligibility as an essential worker. "what do you do?, where do you work?, who do you work for?" They didn't have a photocopier or camera to take pictures of employee identification, pay stubs, credentials, etc. Nor were documenting any other form of identification. I just showed them my drivers license so that they could see that I was the person on the reservation list.
From what I have seen, based on people I know personally, I feel that the vaccination structure is more concerned with simply vaccinating people. Get as many shots, into as many arms, as possible. I know several people who worked in restaurants. You tell the intake person at the vaccination clinic that you work in restaurants which are closed, you're laid off, and you need the vaccination to get back to work because restaurants are reopening. What paystub? You haven't worked in a year. But they reported for vaccination as eligible under "food and agriculture". They got vaccinated. I have an aunt in The Central Valley. She has always worked occasionally as casual labor, cash paid, no check stub. Through word of mouth, different farmers will call her to help out from time to time. Not hard labor like working in the fields, but light duty stuff, running errands when it's really busy. Someone to pick up the dry cleaning and make your bank deposits. When they need someone to help out, who isn't illegal, has a real drivers license, speaks English, whatever. She reported for vaccination as "food and agriculture". She got vaccinated. I have an aunt, who watches kids in the family. Different cousins could always drop by her house, leave their kids for a few hours so that they can run errands, or just to get rid of the kids for a few hours. Now with the pandemic, there is a rotating cast of nephews and nieces hanging out at her house doing their Zoom meeting classrooms. She reported for vaccination as "childcare, schools, education". She has no proof of anything, doesn't actually work anywhere, and has no check stubs. She simply told them the truth, and got a vaccine.
And now, California has opened the floodgates for people who have BMI over 20, smokers, asthma, etc. So I suspect anyone who has a little belly, plus a packet of Marlboro and an inhaler sticking out of their t-shirt pocket qualifies.
I suppose it's a matter of personal ethics. You have to determine if you are eligible. The State prioritized seniors over 75, then seniors over 65, essential workers, minorities in underserved communities, people with underlying health conditions, and then a list of occupations. You look on that list, and wait for your occupation. You decide if you are qualified because of your health. You decide for yourself if you should step aside, and allow someone else to have a potentially lifesaving inoculation. Is it better for you to catch Corona Virus and maybe die? Is somebody else's life more valuable than yours, because of socioeconomic circumstances like race and income level? I know people who rushed over as soon as they could, because they could. Every healthcare and public safety worker I know jumped at the chance to get a shot. Not 1 doctor, nurse, cop, fire fighter.....that I personally know, decided to wait; so that an underserved minority of specified race, below a particular income threshold, living in a low income zip code, can have the vaccine instead.
In Dec 2020 & Jan 2021, the first and second doses were given to seniors in nursing homes, nursing home staffing, and doctors & nurses in emergency rooms, ICU, critical care.....In Feb 2021, all other doctors, dentist, nurses, medical workers workers, cops, fire fighters, EMTs...... were eligible. I put my name on the list, and got my 1st shot on Feb 07. I know people who are only volunteer fire fighters who got vaccinated. I would suspect that some of you guys who live in rural areas where you're part of the local volunteer fire watch, are eligible. That State needs volunteers at vaccination sites. Sometimes it's just directing traffic, handing out information flyers, or pointing people in the right direction. Volunteers get vaccinated. So if you can show up at a vaccination clinic, wear a reflective safety vest, and tell people where to park.....you're in.
Use your best judgment. The doctors and nurses are being asked to do the same. But looking at the latest updates to the eligibility requirements, it looks like California's rules are a wink, a nod, a slap on the butt, and just saying everyone should come get vaccinated.
