This evening I swapped out the pan gasket on my E4OD going from the floppy style rubber one to a brown fiber one from Transtar. So far so good after a few test miles. I couldn't see anything really wrong with the rubber gasket except for being squishy and having fluid on both of its surfaces.
My pan has the protrusions around each bolt hole too. Do they not all have that design? I'll check mine regularly for any issues but so far so good. Dang thing takes almost 8 quarts in the pan...
Hey danp how did you go about sucking trans oil out dipstick tube.....Thanks
I have the vacuum fluid pump...I use it to change the oil in my boat since I can't reach the drain plug. Tube goes down the dipstick tube. It got about half the fluid out, then I just dropped the pan with my floor jack. Didn't spill a drop. No mess at all!

It seems to me that with a pan like this one with the protrusions around each bolt hole that the amount of torque put onto the bolts wouldn't make any real difference; but the thickness of the non compressed gasket could be a very big deal.
Update about a month and a half later. Still seeping around the pan gasket. Double checked the torque at 120 inch pounds. Now going to install the Dorman 4R100 pan, filter and molded rubber gasket.
After trying different gaskets and still having a leak I ended up installing the molded rubber gasket and a Dorman 4R100 pan. My transmission is still leak free after more than 2000 miles of towing my trailer. This style of setup is the way to go. It seems like for whatever reason the original pan just wasn't able to put enough pressure on the gasket even when I torqued the bolts to 120lbs/in. I checked it with a straight edge and it was flat between the bolts yet it still seeped. The new setup when torqued the same amount is absolutely bone dry.
