What gasket did you go back with on your transmission? The reason I ask is right now I have a rubber one from Oreilley's that is seeping. I ordered a Fel-Pro cork one that I'm going to try next.
No, stay away from cork. That's what was split on my own and many report they are problematic.
I used the rubber one from Oreillys too and it seems fine so far. I wanted the steel/rubber reusable but no one had it and I didn't want to wait for an order to arrive. It looked to me like the rubber ones are very sensitive to torque. I was very careful not to over torque but it it starts leaking I'll order the steel rubber one.
If your rubber gasket is leaking, your pan rail is probably bent, most likely from somebody over-tightening the pan bolts at some point. Take it back off, check it with a straight edge, and use a hammer and dolly, or hammer and anvil to tap it back flat.

I torqued the bolts to 100in/lb so I don't think that its warped but I'm going to check it when I have the pan off again.
I don't know if there is a steel rubber one that'll fit my 2 wheel drive E4OD pan. My rubber one seemed ok for a few months and then started leaking.
Dave,
The reusable pan gasket I think is your best bet and is still offered by Ford. The part number is F6TZ-7A191-A and can be found on websites such as fordpartsgiant.com, tascaparts.com, and of course, the Ford dealership.

Those sites are showing that pan gasket is for 1996 and up. His profile says he has a 79. For 1980-1996 E4OD pan bolts should be torqued to 120-168 in lbs. 10 ft pounds- 14 ft pounds
I have that same gasket version, but on my 4R70W. I've had the pan off several times for various reasons and have continued to use that some one for past 60k and 4 years and have had no leaks with it. It's the best I've come across.

I like the felpro products and their gasket is cork that is not my preference how do you feel about it?
I've had mostly good luck with Fel-Pro gaskets. Their header and collector gaskets blew out quickly so now I only use Remflex. My tranny pan gasket is the Ford as mentioned and my differential covers use Lube Locker, all are leak free. Everything else is Fel-Pro, but none are cork. The cork tranny gasket is likely to work fine for you especially if you plan on changing the fluid out every 30k miles or so.

I'll see what condition mine is in and check it out.
The transmission that I built for my truck started as two transmissions, a 1990 big block core for the case and a 1991 small block for a lot of the internals. My transmission has the older style pan with the raised area around each bolt hole that bottoms out against the case when the bolts are tightened. When I first put the transmission together I used the gasket that came in my kit from Transtar which I think was a cork composite. It didn't leak. All was well until I stripped out the splines in the aluminum OD carrier(one thing that I should have upgraded when I built the trans) and I had to repair the transmission. When I put it back together I used a floppy rubber pan gasket from the parts store that just hasn't worked as well for me.
I would go to the 4R100 pan and the newer style reinforced rubber gasket but to make that work I'd have to build a different cross member. This wouldn't be too difficult and maybe I'll go that route if I can't get this pan to be oil tight. Right now I've got the Fel-Pro gasket on the way and if that doesn't work I've also got a Transtec fiber.
Besides the problem I had with the original OD carrier and the pan gasket the transmission works great in my truck.
