Heater Cores

87 F150, With A/C (Factory, and not dealer installed, I think. I'm not actually sure how to tell the difference). Anyway, I'm reasonably certain that the heater core is plugged, as the blend door is free and operating. So I'm going to pull it out and try to flush it (I just find it easier to do out of the truck), if I decide that I need to replace the core, can I replace it with the "High Output" heater core? Or will it physically just not work?

You would find it easier to just pull the heater hoses off and the motor and flush thru them.

I don't know about being able to replace standard core with high output. I don't think you can. I would flush through heater hoses also.

It takes about 5 minutes to open up to the heater core through the glove compartment. Before flushing or ordering a core, measure it to see what you have, then order a brass core like came with the truck.

I put in an aluminum core several years ago. It heats very well, but the fins are so close together on the replacement aluminum cores the air flow is cut down by about 1/3. I wish I had paid the difference and got a duplicate of original. They can still be found online, but are not available from the big boxes like they were when I put mine in.

No, I really wouldn't. It takes all of about five minutes to pull the heater core in one of these, and then I'm able to do a visual inspection to see if the thing is corroding, in addition to whether it's blocked or not.

As in, I've already got it out of the truck, and verified it's got a pinhole leak, and is partially blocked.
