that’s a good point. I had just pulled them to see if they were blown. I’m going to have to get some more multi meter probe tips I guess.

I guess the engine could be hydrolocked also Have you had any excess smoke when starting (ie either raw diesel in the exhaust or coolant)?
yes it had been smoking quite a bit during start

They may or may not be bad, but if he jumps to the battery and the engine doesn't spin, the fuses are not the primary issue.

Then you should try hand cranking the motor over two revolutions.

As stated above - direct power to solenoid and direct power to the starter - If it doesn't spin that way, then it is time to hand crank!

I do it off of the harmonic balancer. Rotate it clockwise while looking at the balancer from the front of the engine. Chock the wheels and put it in neutral to rotate it.

Just a socket and a long bar on one of the bolts, it ain't going to move fast, and at compression, you want to wait a bit for the compressed air to leak past the rings.

Not to be grammar ****, but Bizmic left out a comma after "vacuum pump" and I just want to make sure you understood where the starter wire is. Correct me if I'm wrong, guys, but when my bus hydrolocked, the starter knocked when I tried to start it. I could hear it bumping the flywheel, it just couldn't turn it. OP, does your starter make any noise at all? If not, I guess you can still try to hand crank to confirm, but I'd say you need a starter.

Corrected the grammar!

I agree, usually you can hear it "bump" when your starter is working and you are hydrolocked. That said, rotating the engine by hand is easy enough, and free.

Do I need to remove anything to gain access to the bolts or is there a certain angle I need to be in to access them ?

SYK, starters often fail like that. Work fine and then just don't work. And not hearing anything is a good thing - it means you might not be/probably aren't hydrolocked.

If it is a bad starter, this would be a good time to upgrade to the 6.4L starter - they spin faster.

If you have all the fan coverage in place, the easiest way to hand crank is from under the truck; you turn the crank bolts like you were tightening them. But as Mark mentioned, if the starter IS engaging even with a hydrolock, you hear it engage.

If no bump, it's either the starter brushes or the solenoid that is the issue. If it's the brushes, a few taps with a hammer on the starter's front-facing edge can free them to see if the starter would now work, but it will need replacement. Not extremely hard to do, but intimidating the first time if not familiar.

But with the smoking, you've got other issues once it will rotate over,
