I am new to older Fords and have just picked up a 71 4x4 project truck. I'm sure that I will have some questions as I go, but one thing that has me curious at this moment is, what in the heck is the little black push button for on the right side of the column next to the flasher switch? I've seen it in other trucks, but nobody can seem to tell me what it does. Any ideas? Thanx.
Hey Trevor, welcome aboard. Is it to the right of the flasher? On my '71 F250 2wd I have a cig. lighter there (it's a Sports Custom). On my '71 F250 4x4 it is blank with a plug (that one is a Custom). Does it look factory original or added on? Could it be a trailer brake set up?
This is a button about the size of a dime. The button is actually a switch with a black little boot on it. It is on the left side of the flasher (the cigarette lighter is on the right side of the flasher) and it clicks when pushed in (it reminds me of my automatic lighter on my bbq... LOL). The wires leaving from it go into a wiring harness right away, so they are not easily traceable.
Mine had a little red idiot light on the bottom left part of the dash that flashes on for a second when I start it up. Looks factory, does anyone know what the heck it's purpose is?

That should be the brake warning light....lights up during starting for self test of bulb.....comes on when one brake system, front or back, has a pressure loss.... as in fluid leak.
Dunno...Thats a new one on me. I'm trying to think what would use such a switch. Emergency flasher? The only problem with that, is the older ones like my 68 had that in the glove box. Do you have the E-flasher in the glove box? If so, it's not that...If not, hummm, maybe it's a flasher switch. But that should cause some lights to come on, even if the flasher itself under the dash were bad and didn't click. I'm sure someone will come along that knows what it is, if it's as common as you say. Yep, the lower left red light is the brake warning light...Reminds me, I still need to change the bulb in mine to see if it actually works..I'm always game for an extra device that winks and blinks at me.. My '69 has a cargo light--a white light on the outside of the cab just above the rear window that lights up the inside of the box. The switch for that is in the glove box. Did they move the switch for '71?
, I think you could write a book on how Ford used those holes in the dash to the right of the column. Besides the normal choke, lighter and cargo switch installations I have noticed that the size of the holes seems to vary on different years and also the number of holes. My 68 only had two. One was the choke and the other a blank which I installed a lighter in so I could plug in my phone. I noticed a 67 in the junkyard with three holes and two of them had plugs, the other being the choke. Have you figured out any rhyme or reason to the number and size of these holes and their usage from year to year?
