Yes a little spay on the backside is something I have used to get more modern large headliners in to help avoid kinking them .

here is what I was talking about comparing the original with the repops.

original kickboard cardboard on top, a reproduction under it.

close-up of the original kickboard. See the grain.

incidentally, here is the original insulation that was behind one of the kick panels.
