Greets -
I've got a 2000 Expy that just flipped 45K miles yesterday. I'm writing to see if anybody knows of any known problems with the transmission.
Here's the story:
Yesterday we were driving back from a trip and had about 80 miles left to get to our front door. Suddenly, while doing roughly 70 - 75 on the moderately hilly highway, the rpm's shot from a steady 1500 to 3000. I let off the gas and they dropped down to idle. Went on and off the gas and the rpms jumped up and down as they would if you were in idle. Trouble was that I was in Drive (overdrive turned on) and still clipping along at 70.
I slipped it into neutral for a sec and then back into drive but it didn't reengage. I slowed down to around 50, dropped it out of overdrive and was ok from that point. We continued the remaining 70 or 80 miles at 50 mph with overdrive turned off. Of course to do so meant to maintain the rpms at 3000 - 3500 the entire time.
I'm not a transmission guy whatsoever and will be taking it in to the shop later today.
A friend of mine had to have his transmission replaced 3 times within 36,000 on his '00 xlt expy. I'm not at all sure, but I think they '00 is known for transmission problems.
I've got a 00' and never had an issue. Just went over 45k. Please let me know what happens. I suppose things happen because these vehicles are made by humans, but I had it serviced at 30k so I hope all is well. Best of luck.
J Swanberg hit the nail on the head. While the trannies are not necessarily prone to failure, there certainly will be instances. Unfortunately, you might be one of the unlucky ones. With mechanical equipment, you just never know when a failure might occur. Just look at race cars. Those are probably the most rigorously built and maintained vehicles in the world, however, each week many have mechanical failures.
I have an '00, but it only has 30k miles. I have not had any problems. I am planning to replace the fluid/filter very soon. I have the transmission cooler that came with the factory towing package. I have read that for every 20 degrees cooler that the transmission runs, it doubles the life of the transmission. It sounds optomistic, but I have always had good luck with trucks with the coolers installed.
I'm no mechanic, but if I was forced to guess I'd say there's a "safe" temperature range, and an "unsafe" range and the cooler helps it stay out of the junkyard!
