302 off road build

I am planing on building my 96 bronco with a 302(5.0) and a E4od. I am looking to build it for off road mainly, but it will need to go on highway a little, I also plan on straight axle swapping it and I am wondering what engine, axle and/or tranny upgrades people would recommend.

Welcome to FTE!

Do you have vehicle emissions inspections? If not, are there any law changes on the horizon that may cause them?

If you are clear of testing, then you are clear on mods.

IMO you might be better served with a 351W/4R70 or 4R75 transmission. A late model 351W comes as a roller motor. You could use aftermarket EFI that also includes a transmission controller. (you will need a controller for the E4OD as well)

Your biggest challenge will be the straight axle. What do you have lined up for that?

My state has a 20 year law, so I don't have to worry about emissions, and to be honest I don't know what I want to use for an axle I was thinking of pulling one from a f250. I have access to a lift so I'm not worried about the swap. I started to do research to see what would be good, but I'm new to the Ford platform and want someone else's opinion.

I'm one of the last to ask on this, but I think you can find a Dana 44 from an F150 so you will have the 5 lug setup to match your rear axle.

This is a good thread with lots of pics. He keeps the twin-I beam, and maybe is doing more mods than you plan on:

If you do a search by "Bronco straight axle..." you will get a million hits for kits and diys.

Swap in a 5.8L engine. A relatively stock 5.8L will run rings around that 5L and stay within the programming parameters in the computer. That E4OD transmission will hold up to a lot more torque than a 4R70W will even in stock form. Since your truck is OBD-II the tuner availability is much better.

Everything you wanted to know about Solid Axle Swaps (SAS) from our friends at Fullsize bronco: SAS Swaps

FYI....a F250 did not come with a solid axle front end. It uses the Twin Traction Beam (TTB). The F150 and F350 use a solid front axle. The easiest putt is a Dana 44 swap as noted above.

The next question is how thick is your wallet?? What is your budget....

Axles and lifts are a personal choice, but you've already been pointed at some good axle options on the cheap side. Longtube headers will liven up whatever engine you decide to go with (I've been satisfied with the 5.0, but the 5.8 is a great improvement, check the sixlitre tune-up anyway). If by chance you stay with the TTB front axle, replace the auto-locking hubs, WARN or Mile Marker work great, if you keep the E4OD, I advice adding an auxiliary cooler for improved reliability, you can check both these mods in the links in my sig.

Once you're done beefing up the drivetrain, transmission, engine, I would add a winch (can't suggest any brand since i'm not up to date on that regard). If you'll be driving a lot on the highway, you might want to stay at 3.73, 4.10 ratio at most for the axles, and of course, both axles must match.
